2006-06-26 23:56:00 | I am going to buy a 42" TV. What is the best? By best I mean, which one has the best picture. Any particular brand? I notice DSE has a plasma for $2900.Most other places they are over $3000. I doubt if anyone will reccomend DSE.

2006-06-27 00:11:00 | Sony's Bravia line is very popular and while it is hard to compare in stores, to my eyes they have the best image quality (but they are bit more expensive than $3000). Just remember that if you want to play HD in the future, you need a minimum resolution of 1280 x 720. :) | maccrazy (6741) | |
2006-06-27 00:13:00 | Plasma is very low resolution, but a very good room heater (if you want to pay for the heat, even in summer). If you look at the power consumption of the 42" Plasma, it's between 300 and 400 watts. That alone would put me off, LCD's are around half of that power use/heat output and have both a longer life and better resolution. As digital TV has now been announced, look at the likelihood of larger price drops on standard LCD and plasma models, to make way for digitally equipped models. But they will be more expensive for a start, when available. I would pay little attention to the "digital ready" statements we may see on current stock, I am not certain that they 100% are.

2006-06-27 00:14:00 | I went and had a look at the LCD's they have. I found that compared to the Acer brand and one other that I looked at, the Dick Smith branded Digitors were of superior colour and clarity. Not that I'm an expert, but I have found Digitor to be quite good, and cheaper. Also the plasma was clearer than others. Who knows? :stare: | intel hunter (6666) | |
2006-06-27 00:15:00 | I looked into the DSE 42" Plasma, however after many calls to th local branch and head office etc they could not tell me the life expectancy of the panel. They stated it is a Samsung panel but could not tell me what generation. With no confirmed life expectancy definitely do not go there as the older generation panel's were less than 20,000 hours. (actually didn't like the picture much either) 1. Try and get HDTV ready. 2. Plasmas traditionally have a wider viewing angle and more natural colour than LCD. 3. LCD uses a lot less power than Plasma or CRT. 4. Plasmas suffer from "burn in" when new, or though less of an issue now. 5. LCD are lighter and not so fragile to move. 6. LCD's suffer from motion lag, Plasmas not at all. The list goes on, but in a nutshell buy what is best value at the time be it LCD or Plasma, it really is a Ford vs Holden argument with no clear winner.

2006-06-27 01:19:00 | The Samsung LCDs scored high in the PCWorld reviews for image quality, considering that Samsung are a major manufacturer of LCD panels you'd expect that. I have a Samsung LCD monitor and 32" flat screen CRT TV... both brilliant.

2006-06-27 02:39:00 | the problem with LCD is they get very exspencive in the big sizes. the smaller ones are great for bedrooms etc. with plasma one BIG factor is repairs. cheaper ones simply do not have agents here and getting parts/service can be a big headache. some brands have a minimum 3 week delay (more likly 6 week) in getting parts as they all come from overseas. have a word to the TV repair guys, they can tell you what ones they don't often fix and how easy parts etc are. i have seen some tv's sitting in the workshop for months while they wait for parts.

2006-06-27 05:14:00 | I would get a 32" CRT and wait for Digital stuff to arrive. | Cicero (40) | |
2006-06-27 05:31:00 | I would get a 32" CRT and wait for Digital stuff to arrive. good point, exspecially as most people can't tell the difference between a good CRT and a plasma.
