| 466105 | 2006-06-26 00:58:00 | Hi, I have a friend who is (originally) from London and she made a recent visit to Chc with her (chc) bf whom she met in London, they are now back in London but intend to move to Chc permanently . She has asked me a few questions, are you able to assist . She had been in Chc for her short duration and found the food not that good as London (for asian foods as compared to London Chinatown), so she wants to know: Any store name and approx address would be fantastic . Where is a v good dim sum yum char (chinese restaurant)? A very good japanese restaurant for sushi? Are there any dim sum or japanese restaurant in a hotel complex? Where are you able to get chinese vegetables, where is a good place? Are their farmers markets in Chc, what time and day are they open? Are their a seafood specialist store that you can get all kinds of seafood that sells to restaurants as a wholesale store as well as directly to individual customers? Is there a store that sells a lot of deli food, such as saffron, vanilla beans, to good fresh coffee, to fine cheeses, all sorts of relish and sauces and stuff like that . Also what is a v good western restaurant? She has been to restaurants in London such as the one in London Ritz Hotel, Jamie Oliver Restaurant Fifteen, and one of Gordon Ramsay's so yeah . . . Thanks . |

There's also a food hall that runs between Hereford and High street that serves mainly Asian foods As for cheeses and seafood, i wouldn't have a clue :p |

Geez, is she sure she wants to move here then? Tempting to make smart comments back about "English Food" . Of course England is known for its cuisine, right . Any vege shop will sell chinese veges, Ch/ch is full of Asians . No doubt there are speciality Asian shops there too . Restaurants: www . yellowpages . co . nz I doubt she'll get seafood at wholesale prices unless she is planning to start up a food business . If she doesn't like retail she could always go fishing . If there isn't a deli which no doubt there is, there are plenty online to order specialty products from . www . nzdeli . conz www . zarbo . co . nz www . sabato . co . nz and more . Google is a good resource . And Jamie Oliver is a big noter who can't cook . |

| 466108 | 2006-06-26 03:44:00 | Where is a v good dim sum yum char (chinese restaurant)? Foo San next to the Uni has great Dim Sum. There are quite a few others around, but Foo San rocks. A very good japanese restaurant for sushi? The place that used to be Tokyo Garden on Manchester/Hereford st corner has great sushi. Are there any dim sum or japanese restaurant in a hotel complex? Hmmm pass, however there are loads of places to get both in the central city. Where are you able to get chinese vegetables, where is a good place? Sun Wei on Riccarton Road near Sockburn roundabout is a Chinese food supermarket, there is also a place on Cashel St, Church corner etc..etc.. Hope that helps. :D |

In the Papanui area there are numerous ethnic restaurants and, no doubt, in other parts of that city as well. There is a very good gourmet food store in Manchester Street (if my memory serves me correctly). I am unsure about whether they have a Farmers Market, but the Riccarton market is a large one and includes produce, the one I went to was on a Sunday. pctek has given the sites I was going to tell you about...I will also add www.gourmetdirect.com to the list. Half the fun of going to any other country is finding out what is available and being willing to compromise, where necessary. It's all a matter of attitude and Christchurch is a beautiful city. Cheers, Marnie |

| 466110 | 2006-06-26 04:14:00 | Thanks for the answers, I will report back :D For the deli store, what would be ideal is something like Moore Wilsons in Wellington . For seafood, something like Deep Blue Seafoods on Adelaide Road, Newtown . A store that sells to businesses at wholesale prices as well as to individuals at retail prices and they do some of their fishing with their own boat . Basically quality a much wider selection than going to a supermarket . Like fresh squids, crab, shellfish, salmon, tabico - flying fish eggs . Things like that . I did a internet search regarding Christchurch western restaurants and came up with these . . Saggio di Vino on Victoria Street . Le Bon Bolli - Montreat and Worcester Street . |

| 466111 | 2006-06-26 04:44:00 | I've been to both of those restaurants you mentioned...Le Bon Bolli, several times (they do great breakfasts, too) and would definitely go back to them. Cheers, Marnie |

| 466112 | 2006-06-26 05:28:00 | As far as I know Le Bon Bolli is a French cuisine restaurant . Don't think I would have classified that as "western food" . Personally I would recommend Canterbury Tales Restaurant in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Victoria Square and Tiffanys on Oxford Terrace as good "western" food restaurants . Both are very popular . Otherwise there are heaps of places - use this site ( . dineout . co . nz/index . php" target="_blank">www . dineout . co . nz) as a guide to select places to try . As for your other questions: A very good japanese restaurant for sushi? Haven't actually been there myself but Yamagen Restaurant in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Victoria Square is a Japanese restaurant that has got a good name . Are there any dim sum or japanese restaurant in a hotel complex? See above . Where are you able to get chinese vegetables, where is a good place? Pass . What are chinese vegetables? Vege Pot in Prestons Road has some strange looking veges for sale at times but no idea if they are chinese or not . Are their farmers markets in Chc, what time and day are they open? Lyttelton Farmers market ( . fourcorners . co . nz/new-zealand/product/?product=lyttelton-farmers-market" target="_blank">www . fourcorners . co . nz) is open Saturdays 10am to 1pm . Small but lots of organic veges for sale, amongst other things . Riccarton market ( . travelindex . co . nz/listing/Shopping/266/" target="_blank">www . travelindex . co . nz) at Riccarton Racecourse runs every Sunday sells veges and other foods but it is not a "farmers" market . Are their a seafood specialist store that you can get all kinds of seafood that sells to restaurants as a wholesale store as well as directly to individual customers? I don't buy seafood as we catch our own but Pacific Catch in Tower Junction is a good fish shop with plenty of choice . Is there a store that sells a lot of deli food, such as saffron, vanilla beans, to good fresh coffee, to fine cheeses, all sorts of relish and sauces and stuff like that . Pass . Probably more likely to find individual shops selling selected items rather than everything in one shop . Try Merivale . There is heaps of information on the internet about Christchurch and its offerings - try Googling . |

| 466113 | 2006-06-26 09:33:00 | As noted above, Foo San is great. Authentic southern Chinese food at a budget price. Not a restaurant for those who prefer 'fine dining' in the sense of obsequious staff, finest damask napkins, floor you could eat off, posh decor. It is your basic cafe like the ones I remember in southern China. You pay for the food, not all the haute cuisine folderol. Always full, not easy to get a table. Speaks for itself. Saggio di vino (I think) means sample with wine, or something like that. They specialise in matching food to wine - you get small servings of fine food, with nice and expensive wine. Nice to try if you are not on a budget or starving. Hays on Victoria Street specialises in lamb dishes in particular. It is associated with a cooking school. Excellent food. A restaurant we often go to is Pedros, which does Spanish food. I think the owners are Chilean migrants. They have become a city icon - every time we have gone the restaurant has been almost full or full, and the tables (most of which are large) often have family groups with several generations, or large parties who look like workmates. Excellent food - any restaurant that lasts that long has got something seriously good going for it. Apparently the baby lamb shoulder is to die for if you have a big appetite, but I don't eat red meat so stick to the kai moana - when they have whole flounder on the menu I am silently busy for the entire meal (drool). Many people seem to enjoy Valentinos (again, this restaurant has been there for a long time). I have been underwhelmed when I have gone there, but my adult children continue to go there because they love it. The Yamagen is certainly a posh Japanese restaurant, and there are several others worth going to. Interesting to see how most of the restaurants suggested by previous posters are the more expensive restaurants in the city, including the Yamagen. I have not mentioned any restaurants on The Strip - all the above restaurants you can eat in peace without drunken yobos around. Asian food outlets where you can buy Chinese veges include the Asian Food Warehouse (not sure of the name) in Tuam St next door to the Yoga Room and a couple of houses of ill repute where you can purchase more than bok choy if you get my drift. There are a few other Asian food outlets but the one in Tuam St is my pick. I notice that Raewards near the airport now have a lot of Asian shoppers and they sell a variety of Chinese veges, ginger, and garlic. Seafood - the shop in Manchester Street near Verkerks is always top notch for fresh fishies of various kinds. Asian shoppers flock to both that shop and to Verkerks for meat. There is another highly regarded seafood outlet in Riccarton Road, and Raewards in the Junction in Riccarton has a reliable kai moana outlet called Pacific Catch. Good, but not quite to the standard of the other two. Regarding delis - there is a specialty cheese shop in Salisbury Street (oddly this is also next to a dubious establishment that sells massages). The cheese shop has the best cheeses in the city - well seasoned and ready to eat. They let you try samples before buying. There is a deli in High Street (forget the name, sorry) that will sell the other things you mention (vanilla beans etc), and they have a good selection of NZ wines - not the cheapest in town, but a good way to learn. For coffee, go to one of the specialty outlets, not to a deli. There are several like Hummingbird in Victoria Street, and another one that roasts its own just north of the Town Hall on Colombo Street (sorry, can't remember the name). Whatever, if you expect to get the same sophistication as Wellington, you will be disappointed. ChCh has never had the cosmopolitan populace that Wellytown has had since at least the 1930's and it is still catching up. Make the most of ChCh for its own sake, and don't compare it with Wgtn or you will make yourselves miserable. |

| 466114 | 2006-06-28 05:28:00 | As to the "Asian Food Warehouse" it has shifted from Tuam Street to Manchester and Salisbury St Corner and "Good Things" which was in lower High St has closed down as has the business which took over the site. "Rare Fare" sells those hard to procure items of local produce and is in Papanui somewhere near the old railway station, I think, but it won't be in the Telephone book as yet as it has just opened. It was featured in the "Press" last thursday 22nd June in the "Zest" section. "The Mediterranean Food Warehouse" is in Tuam St between Barbadoes St and Fitzgerald Ave and sell all things mediterranean. "Wick's Fish" is a smallish fish shop in Worcester St by Stanmore Rd which Has a great range of whole and filleted fish, including on occasion "Smoked Groper Cheeks" a delicacy you won't get in many places. "Aji Global Foods" is by the corner of Tuam St in Manchester St and is good for hot and spicy and "the Preservatory" 60 Holmwood Rd is fantastic. If you are in the Cashmere area "Taste @Twenty" 20 Colombo St is a goody. I am hungry just listing these. Yum |
