2006-06-25 11:11:00 | It is interesting to note that the population of the USA is expected to hit 300 million shortly. Check out: www.stats.govt.nz - for our current population count. Small is good?

2006-06-25 11:43:00 | well wealth-wise small is bad. But it is sure nice to be able to go places (mountain biking) and see hardly anyone all day. Uncrowded roads are good too. | gibler (49) | |
2006-06-25 13:04:00 | well wealth-wise small is bad. Not necessarily. According to this listing (www.cia.gov), there are countries with similar demographics to NZ but with higher per-capita earnings. Just noticed that Ireland actually has a smaller population than NZ, but much higher per-capita GDP. Even Singapore is higher. What the heck? When did a country that was a third-world country not long ago exceed the per-capita earnings of NZ? And what is it with Iceland? Population of less than 300,000, but a per-capita earnings NZders can only dream of. What the hell can you do with only 300,000 people? NZ is beating them with the wrong statistic though - child abuse rate. Ugh.

2006-06-25 15:08:00 | well wealth-wise small is bad . But it is sure nice to be able to go places (mountain biking) and see hardly anyone all day . Uncrowded roads are good too . It may sound strange that you can get lost here too for days on end without seeing another bipedal . Many times aircraft don't even fly overhead although for the next few days we are watching intently for incoming ICBM's . Our population is mostly in the crowded cities leaving the central areas and even some of the coastline very much under populated with humans . Not just things like mountains or deserts either, but rivers and lakes don't have elbow-to-elbow persons vying for space and solitude . Most times, I can go to any of the local lakes here in heavily populated SoCal, and run around naked if I was so inclined, and not another human eye would see me . I cannot say that for the woodland animals who are running around looking for sharp sticks to poke out their eyes from having done so . We have our crowded areas: parks, playgrounds, amusement areas and site-seers etc, but as a whole it is one vast empty open area we have here . If those Korean ICBM's arrive, even one of them, there will be a whole new meaning to "empty streets" in Sacramento, Seattle or Los Angeles .

2006-06-25 19:17:00 | I used to be a nationalistic Kiwi, then recently I went to Croatia . That ex-3rd world country kicks our asses . Despite recovering from a war 15 years ago, they have amazing roads, great cars, live as good as we do, and have a beautiful country as well . With all their difficulties, (part of Croatia is still shattered) it seems to be streaking ahead of us in NZ . When we compare ourselves against Europe we expect to be seen as 2nd rate, but other countries that used to be far below us in the past are now our equals . I think we need, as a population, to get out more and see how the rest of the world is changing . Personally I sat around with my head up my rear, for the last 15 years thinking that we were still "godzown" . I used to proudly tell overseas people about the Otira Viaduct as our famous engineering feat . Having had my eyes opened has really made me see NZ as a smallish pretty but quite insiignifigent country in the world, that is languishing behind the rest of the world . You wouldn't believe the amount of autobahns and highways that have been built there in the last 10 years, giving a fantastic roading system, that makes us look like we are still using old country roads, and our ongoing bickering debates over Transmission gully and trucks falling into the sea at Kaikoura as pathetic . Even turkey has fast broadband internet at $1 per hour for the tourists . The problem living on an island is that we don't see these changes happening much and forget how the rest of the world is growing .

Of course, lots of new autobahns and roads will be really useful when all the oil dries up  - like all the 'experts' have been threatening since the 1970's!!! :p |

2006-06-26 01:36:00 | NZ's geographical location is a very large handicap compared to countries like Ireland whom are on the back door of Europe with a huge population (consumers). Everything NZ exports has to be either shipped of flown. Also because of our geographical locating we have to fight to stay in markets such as Europe, unlike Ireland that is part of the European union. There is more to every story than just figures, NZ is not exactly making a killing, but we arn't doing bad either. Last time i checked there is more to life than just money, and thats why so many Europeans etc come here to live to get balance.
