702633 2008-09-05 04:39:00 You'd be brave for choosing XP over Vista. ;) pcuser42 (130)
702634 2008-09-05 18:43:00 I would go fo a 24" monitor with a HDMI and component and 2 x usb, L246WH-BN its an LG.
I have it and it is the best I have used.

Samsung has had alot of controversy over their lcd monitors in the gaming community as they got other parties to make some of their panels and they made some and some of the panels that the other parties made for Samsung were very below par compared to the ones that Samsung themselfs made and it was a real pain to have to sort out which were the good panels, ie. there codes and which were ok in the same series of panels.

So alot of people choose other brands instead of Samsung because of the lottery of which panel you could get etc.so they went with Viewsonic,H.P.,LG etc.

I dont know what the story is with Samsung now with their lcd panels but my LG is great it even does 4:3 in wide for your old school games as well as 16:10 for watching DVD movies with 1080p and I have progressive scan with my pioneer dvd DV-400V plugged in with HDMI to it for when I watch movies and for gaming I have a DVI from pc to HDMI to the monitor cable which also does 1080p for when I am playing my games.

I bought mine for $659.00 from www.globespec.co.nz best money I have spent on a pc yet.

I would get a small harddrive for the OS and programes and a big harddrive for games and music so you could take the music/games harddrive with you in an external caddie and your all good and so you can take it to your friends house and copy games, and movies and music and other stuff:D as well!!!!

I would also get a nice big external harddrive using eSata so you can make back ups/copy/clone whatever you like to call it of your computer for when something bad happens you will have it all sorted and your back again with no problems.

I would also look very hard at the price of the Nvidia GTX 280 and compare it to the price of the ATI 4870 1 gig DDR 5 and check out the benchmarks at the gaming websites!!!:D For price performance, features, etc.

MB I prefer Gigabyte and MSI as well, they have not let me down Asus has, I dont touch them now because of that.

I would also make the switch to a DDR 3 MB and get the cheapest 2 gig DDR 3 for it for now and as prices drop sell the ram off and get better faster as time goes on,I would not buy a brand new computer now with DDR 2 as it is being replaced with DDR 3 so I would switch to a DDR 3 MB now so you are not stuck with only using old DDR 2 on a old DDR 2 MB.

Personaly I would go for a 64 bit OS so you can have more ram.(XP PRO 64 bit/Vista 64 bit).

2 gig is all good for now but for long term well the trend is for more ram, just look at all the top new games and what they say you can play it with and then you put more ram in and see how it perferms so much better with it.

Case in point old game now BF2 minimum 256mb,sucks, reccommend 512mb,a little better but still sucks,1 gig thats better now were playing,2 gig let me at them, its time to rock and roll baby!!!:D

So the new best games minimum specs go up as do the reccommended specs and then the real specs you should use instead also goes up.Thats why I would go for a 64 bit OS so you can have 4 gigs or more for now or later or when ever you need/want it you can have it as long as your MB can do it as well your all good.

Sound Card or MB sound?

Headphones or Speakers or are going to use a stereo or Home Theater to hook it up to for your sounds?

Gaming Keyboard and mouse and mouse mat or anything on sale cheap etc.?

Check out www.pricespy.co.nz it will help you out for prices on computer stuff.

Hope this helps and have a good time playing your games, I know I do!!!

To actually play the games requires MojoPac. (http://www.mojopac.com) ;) Copying a game to another PC won't work either, as there are Registry entries, as well as other things, to be imported. :)

Of course, if you install the game from the disc, you can copy the saved games. :D

Logitech should be a well-received brand for keyboard and mouse. I personally think that wired mouse is better as the latency is reduced slightly over the counterpart.

Cheers :)

702641 2008-09-06 02:15:00 Make sure you get a keyboard with Ambient backlit keys to allow gaming in low-or no-light conditions.:punk

And usb 2.0 plugs to provide additional peripherals plug-in access with maximum conductivity such as your mouse.:)

And get a good gaming wired mouse with good dpi as well.
