466511 2006-06-27 06:04:00 I would get a 32" CRT and wait for Digital stuff to arrive.

Excellent advice Tom.

Mind you, judging by the time it took you to buy that camera, if it was your decision the digital stuff would still be here and you would still be waiting....

JJJJJ, I say buy the 42" LCD and get the enjoyment out of it now, you could be dead by the time the digital gets here.

Best to go somewhere like Harvey Normans to compare side-by-side, then shop around for your choice of make and model. But while I would stay away from Plasma, check them out side by side though.

When digital arrives, it will still work with a set-top box at worst, or you could have it as a spare TV in the bedroom, attach it to the ceiling?

Or donate it to Cicero. A worthy cause.

466514 2006-06-27 12:06:00 Somebody on here has made the wrong decision to buy a LCD ands wants poor old JJ to do the same.
I took a while to decide to buy a camera because I didn't particularly want one,but I do like toys.
The fact is, a top of the line CRT is cheap today and the picture is superb,JJ would be better to wait.
Others such as our wise 001 will attest that this is the way to go at the moment.
Then next year you can indeed send your Philips double pixel TV to me,and I will give it a good home.I might add the chances are you wont want to part with it.

466515 2006-06-27 18:36:00 As I said in my original post. I am going to buy a 42" TV.
I am not interested in digital that will probably arrive after I've gone. I am not interested in 32". I want a 42!

So far "godfather" has made me think. Nobody Had mentioned the heat and power consumption of the plasma.

I have been told by a friend that has had a 42" plasma for a couple of years that the tube (or whatever) is supposed to last 10,000 hours. He made no mention of the heat.

Anyway I have never owned a TV for long enough for it to be "out of warranty"

Another thing that makes me wonder is I have noticed several cheaper sets that seeem to have a better picture than some dearer ones.

I only want the TV to watch TV. I no longer have a vcr or a dvd

466516 2006-06-27 20:15:00 Get a 50 inch,I have heard they are very good.
Where reason ceases to prevail,it doesn't matter what you get.

466517 2006-06-27 20:41:00 I say stick with crt that has 100hz picture is stiil clearer than a lcd no matter what anyone says, the refresh rate on lcds is still to slow and stiil creates a ghost image of fast moving objects like tennis balls etc etc, my advice stick with crt until they get lcd 100 percent right. 466518 2006-06-27 20:59:00 Hi,
My brother went through 2 plasma TV's. One was to replace the other & he has now gone back to what he had before plasmas. He had problems with the burning in of them, loss of picture in parts, they are heat sensitive eg if you have a log burner in close proximity it isn't good for them, & the screens can't be cleaned.

I saw a documentary about them a while ago & it said that technology on them isn't so good yet to make them a good investment.

Plasma have also come a long way in the last few years as have LCD .

Most new Plasmas like the 42" Samsung I purchased a few months back, last 60,000 hours which is about 27 years at 6hrs per day which is fine .

The heat is fine about the same as a CRT, and the fan noise is non existent, it has Auto burnin protection so those sorts of issues are basically sorted on the newer models .

It does however consume 290watts(about the same as CRT) which is a fair bit but keeping it in real perspective maybe adds $5-10 a month onto your power bill opposed to a LCD .

The purists prefer Plasma due to the more natural colours and no lag, however they are more expensive to run, AND of course LCD has improved a ton in the last few years, but still not as good IMO .

I chose Plasma purely based on the picture quality, which is far more like a large screen CRT, simply would not have been happy with LCD and I looked at dozens .
