466294 2006-06-26 21:33:00 well i'll jump in here and ask

whats Nanny Mcphee like as with the school holidays coming up i would like one that i could watch as well as the kids, as a lot of the movies these days are a bit tedious for adults
We took the grandchildren to see it Nigel, and they loved it.10 and 12 years old. And I survived it as well. It's not too over my head!!!!!!!

466295 2006-06-26 21:57:00 I haven't seen too many kids movies lately, but they usually add in a bit of adult humour so that the parents and grandparents don't mind watching the movie with the kids. Greven (91)

Walk the Line, Phoenix and Witherspoon were chosen by Johny Cash and June Carter; not dubbed but their real voices. If the music and the story itself does not move you then you gotta be dead. Witherspoon got the Oscar for best female actor (actress?), Phoenix was nominated for best (male) actor.

Red Dust, another fact-based film for the thinking person. South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Archbishop Desmond Tutu said that everyone should see this film as it is something that can help heal the world. Hillary Swank in a role way different than in Million Dollar Baby. Gripping.

Something the Lord Made, true story (even down to the actual dialogue), John Hopkins Medical Centre. Beetle :) , you gotta see this one! Inspirational. Not religious, BTW.

Crash, incredible cast and script. Heavy hitting. Has won numerous awards. Should be required viewing for all police, social workers, etc. - not just in the USA but here in NZ as well as other countries.

King Kong, thank God for the FFWD button. Peter Jackson should be throttled for wasting everyone's time on this monumental piece of :yuck: s**t.

Inside I'm Dancing, Irish, an independent film (not Hollywood). This one is especially for Metla :D . A crazya*s young guy in a wheelchair raises havoc in a home for the disabled. Lots of laughs, but with meaning. Put it on your big screen, Mets, and crack open a few Macs!

466297 2006-06-26 22:29:00 Hi Nigel,
I took my niece & nephew to it earlier this year, they are aged 7 & 4. We all enjoyed it as did my 19 yr old daughter.
Pauline.

466298 2006-06-26 22:37:00 Hey thanks all for the Nanny Mcphee help

and Steve L, I like the look of that list, I'm not a big fan of hollywood blockbusters and it is hard to find any real info on other movies that isn't marketing hype, so cheers for that it's given me a few other movies to look for

466299 2006-06-26 22:45:00 The Da Vinci Code - a good thriller. Great choice of actors - Tom Hanks and Audrey Tatou. And great scenery - the art works, cathedrals, etc. Understandably, fundamental Christians hate this film and the book. But amidst all of the false claims in The Da Vince Code, it nevertheless exposes some awful foundations the 'Church' is built upon.

So don't believe everything in the film or the book. If you want some real facts and insights, get this book: Secrets of the Code: The Unauthorized Guide to the Mysteries Behind The Da Vinci Code :
This unprecedented volume provides a wealth of fresh insight from the world's most respected authorities on the novel's controversial historical, religious, artistic, and scientific themes. Interviews and commentary from renowned scientists, theologians, archeologists, philosophers, historians, and art historians address such provocative topics as.... see more here on Amazon.com. Is that the movie about the first heart bypass operation? I saw it completely by accident - it was on sky while I was packing up my motel room after doing some work in Timaru a while ago. It was very interesting, and I ended up watching the whole movie before heading home.

466301 2006-06-27 00:56:00 I enjoy movies too but normally only see them on DVD. Finding a good movie isn't always easy so I use the Internet Movie Database (us.imdb.com) . Generally the highly rated films tend to be worth watching and you'll come across some you've never heard of.

A few suggestions off the beaten track:

Run Lola Run
Slingblade
Memento
Donnie Darko
Gattica
Full Metal Jacket
A Clockwork Orange
The Butterfly Effect
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Metropolis

Yep, thats the one.

And for those thinking the subject matter is boring, no it is not... unless you only like American-style car chases and gun fights.
