2008-09-04 23:32:00 | This has probably been covered before, but last night when I went to install SP3 on an XP Pro machine (Dell), it got about two-thirds of the way through, and then failed with an 'Access is Denied' message box. To fix it, I installed SubInACL from here (www.microsoft.com), and then created and ran a batch file called SP3.bat with the following code: cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose This allowed SP3 to install fine, but I'm wondering what caused the permissions lockout in the first place - the original reason I had the PC was to remove an XP Antivirus 2008 infection. Are the two related??

2008-09-04 23:42:00 | This looks like the info from MS (support.microsoft.com) It looks like there's 2 batch files, one for Home and one for Pro. The one you posted is for Pro. Remove the bottom line, for Home Was teatimer running in the background? That may have stopped it, from writing to the registry.

2008-09-04 23:47:00 | Yeah I did think it may have been AVG 8.0, but I disabled the services, killed all the running processes associated with it, and there were no other spyware removers installed at that stage? | nofam (9009) | |
2008-09-05 00:00:00 | I've had the same thing a bunch of times, especially after cleaning out spyware, namely WinAntiVirus 2009. Running the appropriate batch file has fixed it every time.

2008-09-05 02:06:00 | Can anyone tell me why I need sp3 when I have run XP since 2001 with hardly any problems? I say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". | mzee (3324) | |
2008-09-05 02:10:00 | Well you dont have to install it, but it fixes a lot of bugs / vulnerabilities And you may or may not get hit by one. BUT, its up to you whether you want to install it or not. The only PC its going to affect is yours if it gets hit BUT I wouldnt get on the net with no service pack at all

2008-09-05 02:10:00 | www.winsupersite.com That site has a lot of info about SP3. The main drawcard of it for IT people/system builders is you don't need to download the hundred and something updates for SP2, and all the annoyances that come with them. :groan: This bit is copied and pasted from one section. Windows XP Service Pack 3 will not include any major new features, but it will include four minor new features that improve the system's reliability and security. Contrary to reports, Microsoft has been very up-front about these functional additions for quite some time now. These new features include: Network Access Protection compatibility. Announced years ago, this feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well. Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup. Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that "encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms," according to Microsoft. "Black hole" router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista. And that's about it. Nothing dramatic, as promised. It's also removed the taskbar based address bar option.
