They are "supposed" to be completely destroyed. But are they?.Has geological surveying ever been conducted?.They aparently lie under 30-40 metres of water. Then ash and molten rock.

If the Government threw 100 million at a project to drain Lake Rotomahana into Lake Tarawera, plus excuvation of the two sites. Then perhaps there is alot more there?.At worst they could rebuild them,on a bigger scale than what has been acheived with the Wairakei Terraces.

Why not try to bring back the 8th natural wonder of the world. And in the process generate billions of tourist dollars for the future of our country. The other side to the coin is that the Te Arawa Tribe could have back what belongs to them and run it as a commercial operation.

But is this too much to contemplate for our "drongo" Government??

I don't know if it could be done but I enjoyed looking at the material here

If they rebuilt them, they would no longer be a natural wonder

467320 2006-06-29 23:33:00 Well, I worked at Waimangu Thermal Valley in the late 1980s (actually 1986, 100 years after the eruption itself) and we always told visitors that they weren't buried as such but destroyed by the shockwave...

When the Mount erupted it dumped the entire contents of the lack (water, mud, fish etc) onto the lava below... that flashed the whole lot to steam and pushed it outward very quickly (we always said Mach 7 but I have no idea if this is accurate or not). The Buried Village wasn't so much buried as washed away in a scorching blast, and I would say the same would be true of the Terraces...

There is one place within the Valley (off the walking track, or at least it was when I was last there - they may have opened it up since then) where new mini terraces are forming. The buildup of minerals was taking place again, albeit very slowly, and while the pools being formed were tiny, they were also very fragile. If the P&W were as fragile they wouldn't have survived being buried, let alone being blasted with thousands of litres of hot steam (do you measure steam in litres?).

Still, give it time and they'll be back. Sadly I think it will probably take hundreds of years at the least.

The Valley is still worth a visit. The enormous hot lake whose name I can't remember is quite fascinating (I nearly crashed a van into it. Oh the good old days) and Ruomoko's Throat is a very slow geyser that creeps up to full size and then drops back on a monthly cycle. They don't call it Ruomoko any more for some reason, but I have no idea what the new name is.

We used to get foreign tourists who turned up expecting to see the Terraces. They were most unimpressed that nobody had thought to tell them they'd been destroyed a hundred years earlier. Quite funny. Someone should have sent them an email!

467321 2006-06-30 01:50:00 Very interesting Audent. I suppose they could drill down to see if anything is left but your explanation of complete destruction sounds right.

There are other volcanic mineral terraces in the world so we'd be a bit hopeful thinking tourists would flock.

Incidentally the latest thinking on tourism is that New Zealand has had its time in the sun. We have been fashionable for about 30 years and tourists are wanting alternatives. New tourists are looking at North Africa and South America.

467322 2006-06-30 10:07:00 I hope Utopia is being facisious. The area where the terraces were is now under 300feet of earth. And considering the fact that Rotomahana was created by the erruption the chances of the terraces still being intact are absolutely zero. JJJJJ (528)
