466552 2006-06-27 00:16:00 Hello.

I have bought a Dick Smith 120gig DVD recorder and am resonably happy with it but there seems to be a problem stemming from it.

Initially some of my timer records (not a lot, but enough to be very annoying) would record sky but the signal would be ruined and unwatchable, sky would need to be unplugged and rebooted.

This hasn't happened in a while, instead whats happening is Sky is resetting to channel 0, the movie preview channel. so instead of the latest World Cup game, i get 2 hours of crap. I do not know if there is a correlation between the recorder and sky, its just a guess. I havent seen sky reset itself, only when it records has this happened.

I phoned sky but they offered no explaination except saying they would send a tech round and if it was my fault it would cost 30 bucks. i said no thanks.

Is it possible that the power needed to turn on the recorder and then to record could briefly out the power to the sky decoder? This is just a guess but they are running off the same multi plug. Or do you think its a decoder issue?

Any help would be great, cheers.

466553 2006-06-27 00:23:00 Hardly likely to be a multi-plug issue, as a 100 watt load from a 2,300 watt mult-plug is nothing, and unless you have it on a 100 metre extension flex it's not going to be a power supply issue. If you actually overloaded the multi-plug it would trip and not reset.

You omit to advise how you are interfacing the two devices, if it is using a SCART plug it's *possible* that a control signal is responsible, if by RCA connectors its not likely.

Sky does reset whenever they do a decoder software patch/upgrade, happens every month or so here.

466554 2006-06-27 00:32:00 get on the phone to sky and tell them over and over again that your decoder keeps resetting istself back to channel zero all the time they should replace the decoder at no cost i have had this prblem many times this year and on every situation they have replaced my decoder and now it works fine no problems at all and they didnt charge me.Ask to speak to a guy when you ring sky as some of the women tend say oh i dont know it could be this and it could be that rather than getting something done about it. 466555 2006-06-27 00:35:00 Thanks.

It is happening way more than once a month tho, probly once every 3 or four days (im taping football every night).

It would appear to be a SCART to RCA. I have a decoder which seems to have to SCART outputs, i think one went to my video, so now i have a spare blue cord - SCART to RCA, as i dont use my VCR anymore.

SCART to RCA is unlikely to be able to affect the Sky box. Complain and just hide the recorder to save confusion...

466560 2006-06-27 02:43:00 two comman causes of reseting decoder. power interuptions and over heating. some models handle heat better/worse than others tho its normally summer time when they fail. at the moment with all the power issues going on it would not suprise me if a lot of decoders are doing that.

failing that, replace it. the powersupply in it may be starting to go and can't handle the hot water ripple or minor dips in voltage.
