703557 2008-09-08 06:34:00 Hi
I'm trying to convert some ASF files to AVI. So basically converting from WMV9 to Xvid.
Is there any point to doing:
WMV9 -> Raw uncompressed -> Xvid

instead of just straight
WMV9 -> Xvid?

I realise there will be a slight drop in quality, but its mainly because my dvd player plays divx/xvid, but not wmv9.

At first I thought going the uncompressed route would yield better quality, ultimately, I'd still be encoding the same images. Eg for Jpg, saving it again as a jpg would have the same results as jpg->TIFF (or something similar)->jpg because the intermediate TIFF will only ever be as good as the original jpg anyway...

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

703558 2008-09-08 06:53:00 You are correct - transcoding via an intermediate format will yield no improvement in quality, and in some situations can even make it worse. Always encode directly from the original if you can, and if that isn't possible transcode directly from format_a to format_b. Erayd (23)
703559 2008-09-09 06:04:00 Not going to use lossless? Raw uncompressed is massive and only works if you have infinite hdd space or your clip is really really short.

There are various tools that can do such conversions for you without you worrying about that's happening in the middle. Look them up in www.videohelp.com or something.

If you want a challenge, learn how to use Avisynth and probably MeGui too. Avisynth can serve up video so you can skip your uncompressed raw, etc..

703560 2008-09-09 06:49:00 I like to have full control over the process. My clips are about 4gb in length, 640x360. I calculated that raw would take about 110gb, which isnt a huge problem for me ;)

But I think I will go with the direct route. I'll have a look at avisynth and megui too. My test conversions seem to cause the videos to lose synch (because ASF+WMV9, because it is a streaming protocol, does not have a fixed frame rate. grr)

703561 2008-09-09 07:56:00 wow..110Gb to play with.. nice~

personally I avoid wmv, so not much experience on fixing sync
you can look through the doom9.org forum for more assistance
chances are someone probably tried something similar already
