I like to add network storage to my system.
After surfing the net and looking at options I am thinking of adding a Linksys nas200 with 2/500gb seagate drives.
Has anyone of you done that? Any other systems similar to this?
The cost added up came to $500.-, which I thought to be reasonably ok.
Would be nice to get some feedback to this ?
Thanks

703289 2008-09-07 19:25:00 Lots of NAS boxes on the market now. Some cheap, some expensive. You can get a Nas box off trademe and just put the hard drives you want it it, or go with a complete NAS system

D-Link also do a reasonable one, which sounds good, not sure on pricing on theirs.

You probably get what you pay for. Some handle Print Serving, File serving and a host of extra stuff built in, some are just basic storage.

Do you know any of them that include printer server?
Thanks

703291 2008-09-07 21:45:00 Those NAS200's are a nice unit, has remote access from the Internet also if you want - I have put in a couple and working perfectly.

Only one person had trouble with it, and even then that's not really the NAS's fault, the problem is the guys wife keeps on turning it off at night. He has thousands of songs on it and they play through Itunes.

The problem is if the unit is turned off and the PC is then turned on, then the unit turned back on,Itunes for some reason can not play the music, you can access the songs perfectly by going into the folders - but if the unit is left on like they are meant to 24/7 then theres never a problem - its an Itunes problem.

All other programs that are related to the files on the NAS work perfectly even if the unit was turned off.

So the unit sounds fairly good.
As you haven't mentioned printer server I assume that that is not included? Have you any experience good or bad with others?

I like to add network storage to my system.
After surfing the net and looking at options I am thinking of adding a Linksys nas200 with 2/500gb seagate drives.
I have just added one of these myself to my home network. I used 2 x 500 gig drives but used the RAID option for greater data security.

I find it is great although data transfer is a lot slower than i expected but i am certainly not disappointed.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the speed say in comparison to a USB2?

703295 2008-09-09 04:19:00 Ive been down this road myself.
The cheaper NAS's are horridly slow, even the ones with the good brand name.
My NAS is approx 1/4 of USB speed (if that)

The Routers with built in NAS are also have very slow speeds to the HD (google some reviews).
Since you were going to have 2x500G, I'd assume you will want to transfer alot of data to it, may be a painfull(slow) experience to initially get the data on.Still, once its on there, you may not need alot of transfer speed.

Linksys nas200
"Slow performance"
www.pcmag.com
"Considering the low functionality and very low performance of the device, its very appealing price (about $150) cannot be a decisive argument in its favor"
www.xbitlabs.com

I guess there's a reason 'real' nas cost big bucks....

703296 2008-09-09 04:56:00 it may be slightly slower at data transfer, but you need to be realistic - How often are you going to be transferring large amounts of data ?

If the NAS200 is going to be used as a LAN storage device there is no problems.

Dont always take to much notice of reviews - take for example Nortons products always get rave reviews - yet we all know how bad they actually are.

In one of those links provided
its throughput is too slow for movies. Crap! I know one of the customers that I installed the NAS200, they regularly have 3 users either watching movies or playing music from it all at the same time - no lag at all.

703297 2008-09-09 05:36:00 I've seen a chart somewhere summarizing and comparing a list of NAS' performance..just that I can't find it now

thought it was on tom's hardware but couldn't find it

anyway, personally I have an old 500MHz computer with FreeNas installed and works fine for me
