703116 2008-09-07 01:17:00 I recently did some hardware changes to my home-built system. Now I have major problems. The symptoms are that Vista will not run for more than a few minutes without freezing or giving a BSOD - with a variety of messages. Sometimes the system hangs or reboots even before it gets to the logon screen. Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 also won't run from a live CD - they just hang late on in the startup. The odd thing is that Vista will run in safe mode OK - but not in normal mode.

The upgrades(?) were:

Change from 2GB to 3GB RAM - the extra stick was the same brand/type etc as the old ones.
New video card - ATI Radeon 4850 - but see below.
New processor - change from Athlon 64 X2 4400 to Athlon 64 X2 5600
New power supply - from Zalman 300w to Q Technology 560w

What I have tried:

Run extended memory diagnostics - no errors found.
Tried 2 different video cards and also the on-board video - same problems occur.
Re-installed Vista (twice!) still no good.
Checked all the power supply connections and processor installation - all looks OK.

The BSOD messages include IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, but also just unidentified stops, and stops associated with files - various.

I am wondering whether I have damaged the mobo (ASUS M2N-MX) when I made all the changes - what tools are there around that could help me prove/disprove that?

The weird thing is that Vista runs OK in safe mode - so what is it that Windows exercises in normal mode that it doesn't in safe mode? Mostly drivers I would have thought, but I think I have eliminated video drivers as the problem. Is there a BIOS setting I should have changed? I can't see anything obvious.

So there you go - a little challenge for all you hardware jocks!

703117 2008-09-07 01:29:00 What revision of the BIOS is on it?

Is the CPU 1mb or 2mb?

Does the BSOD show the name of a driver?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
703118 2008-09-07 01:38:00 From the BIOS Setup screen:

CPU Revision F2
L1 cache 128k
L2 cache 1024k

Ami Bios v0404

The BSOD has shown all sorts of things, including ntfs.sys and others, but it is not consistent at all.

703119 2008-09-07 01:57:00 Well there's only 2 5600 CPU's for this mobo

This

Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (CZ),2MB,rev.F3,89W,SocketAM2 0404 which doesnt look like yours, since its 2 MB

Or this

Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (DO),1MB,rev.G2,65W,SocketAM2 1004

Which sounds like yours, since its got 1 MB

Hmm there is no 0404 version of the BIOS for this mobo

It goes from 0302 to 0411. You sure you've got the M2N-MX?

BIOS update (dlsvr04.asus.com) and AFUDOS (dlsvr04.asus.com)

It looks like this is the latest version of the BIOS

703120 2008-09-07 02:13:00 yes, it is definitely M2N-MX. revision 1.03G scribed on the mobo.

So, how do I use the links you gave me to update the BIOS? Will they run from safe mode, or do I go from a command prompt, or what? I can put the files onto a floppy on the PC I'm on now, and run them on the bad PC? - is that the way?

I had wondered about the BIOS - but never pursued it.

703121 2008-09-07 07:29:00 Yes. It tells you how in the mobo manual if you have it if not download it from the asus site and yes if it is Asus ezi flash just download it unzip it then save to a bootable floppy disk then follow instructions in the manual. gary67 (56)
703122 2008-09-07 09:35:00 The BSOD messages include IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, but also just unidentified stops, and stops associated with files - various.

Do you have any Norton product installed? I see you are running Vista, I have XP and problems started after installing SP3. Same message I got before all sorts of dramas. If you have, either uninstall them or get their registry fix and run it.

703123 2008-09-07 11:11:00 Right, two steps forward and one back, I think.

I updated the BIOS (thanks, Speedy), and after a bit of a panic when my RAID setup disappeared before I re-enabled it in the BIOS, I got back into Vista, and it certainly is more stable than before, but still I get the BSOD when I try to install the Radeon drivers and also Vista SP1. I've taken out the Radeon 4850 (temporarily, I hope) and now have a Radeon X1650 that seems to be OK. Still got the problem with Vista SP1. Tomorrow's problem, I think.

I don't have Norton installed (or anything else - it is a brand new naked Vista at the moment).

703124 2008-09-07 22:00:00 still I get the BSOD when I try to install the Radeon drivers and also Vista SP1. I've taken out the Radeon 4850 (temporarily, I hope) and now have a Radeon X1650 that seems to be OK.

The IRQL error is either RAM or drivers. In this case Its your driver.
Did you install the latest driver from ATIs site for the 4850?

I would say its the drivers, thats why Vista runs in safe mode, as very little drivers are started....
To fix, remove all memory but 1 stick, just to be sure, and systematically install video\sound hardware testing in between....
