468853 2006-07-05 14:43:00 The following are the facts, the whole facts and nothing but the facts .

Do our local newspapers over-report on local crime? .

How do we compare with OECD countries? .

Would you like to see that space filled with more positive articles? .

I surveyed local and overseas newspapers to find out . The following stats were taken from todays papers 5/6/06 or the nearest Wednesday to it for comparability purposes . Listed are number of articles featured .

New Zealand Herald - 11
Christchurch Press - 8
Otago Daily - 3
Bay Of Plenty Times - 15
Waikato Times - 6
Dominion Post - 9
Sydney Morning Herald - 3
London Times - 1
The Age - 5
The Australian - 3
The Courier Mail - 5

As you can see the "supreme anal retentive" award goes to the 'editor' of the Bay Of Plenty Times with 15 local crime related artices . :groan:

For this, the reccomended course of action is the following:

# All Bran and Prune juice for breakfast .
# Dates,Rasins, Kiwifruit and Aloe Vera for Lunch .
# Rhubarb Pie and Flax Oil/Castor Oil Smoothie for Dinner

This will provide the necessary colon cleansing required for you to "wake up to yourself",and stop being such a huge negative bastard!! . This is why I don't read papers like yours . Especially when you hide under the guise of the "Crime Times" . If I wanted to read such negativity I'd use http://www . crime . co . nz for free, and not pay to read your crime times newspaper! . :annoyed:

I'm happy to see major crimes reported, but when this becomes over-kill,you ask yourself what the editors agenda is: That being a paranoid, Neurotic ,self-obsessed dickhead! .

BTW: Well-done to Otago Daily with 3 articles

OECD average: 3 . 4
N . Z average: 8 . 6

Of note: London Times with only one "Major" local crime reported . That's the way it should be .

As for me,I'll stick with www . stuff . co . nz and select "positive" articles I wish to read for free . :D

468855 2006-07-05 22:58:00 Good luck Utopia and I admire your positive attitude .

Unfortunately, the rest of us are stuck with reptilian hind-brains which focus on bad news . There is a reason for this . In order to survive, every creature takes notice of bad stuff which happens to it or it's neighbour . That's how we learn to recognise and avoid risk .

Our brains are hard-wired for bad news . We learn from it so that we can survive . The fact that we lead sophisticated lives and most dangers no longer exist doesn't matter to the hind-brain . It keeps a keen eye out - just in case . And keeps us buying the papers . ;)

468856 2006-07-06 01:23:00 hang on a mo . . .

if none reports the crimes etc then how does joe public learn how do keep safe or not to do crimes etc if stuff all of it is reported .

ignorance is bliss but it may well kill you .

personally i would like more info on the crimes reported . to often there is accidents or crimes but very little info on what happened . a few of the tv shows are not to bad, at least you can see what mistakes where made and so you can avoid doing the same thing .
