468406 2006-07-04 06:40:00 I just installed a pc game called "Arthurs reading games" for my little sister.
However after a reboot an icon is placed on my desktop for a free trial of AOL (which i obvously cant use, as i live in nz) it also installs an aol application thingiee on my hdd.
This is about as bad as spyware included in programs like kaaza but it is actually worse as the installer made no mention of it...
:annoyed:

468407 2006-07-04 06:56:00 And how old is this PC game?? My "Arthur's Teacher Troubles" game must be at least 12 years old. Spyware hadn't even been heard of back then but I bet they had already started dreaming it up. :groan: FoxyMX (5)

468409 2006-07-04 07:05:00 Ah. Well in that case yes, AOL are evil. But then, that has been known for a long time so we shouldn't be surprised. FoxyMX (5)
468410 2006-07-05 02:18:00 not to mention what i discovered this morning
A SPYBOT ALERT
the file came from the same game..!

468411 2006-07-05 06:15:00 They aren't totally evil. Many people in the US didn't have to buy any floppies for years; they kept getting them free from AOL. Just needed reformatting to remove the AOL startup files. Not so useful when they changed to CDs.

The "Spybot" is probably just the link to AOL. You'd need to click on the icon to actually connect to AOL.

AOL believed in marketing.

468412 2006-07-05 07:44:00 Let me tell you about America On Line and marketing .

I have over 3,000 cd's from them in the past 4 years that I save to hang in fruit trees to scare off birds . (OK, some were addressed to neighbors . . but I got a lot in my name too!)

Some people have made whole walls into psychedelic mirrors with them .

The post office hates them as they usually come in rather neat magnetically-sealed and very expensive to produce bulky boxes that won't fit thru a mail slot on a door .

Some gangs use them for target practice to hone their drive-by shooting skills .

I bet your neighbours have wondered for years where have those cd's from AOL went. SurferJoe stole them from their letterboxes

The average keyboard allows for between 35,000 to 84,000 strikes of any one key as to longevity.

I bet that the UK, NZ & Australian keyboards wear out their "u'"s fast....there's too much French inbreeding in there I suspect.
