703146 2008-09-20 07:09:00 I have experienced this sort of thing. I use MN2MX-SE boards in similar ways, my routine is FDISK and a clean new install. It saves wearing egg with RMA requests. This sort of thing as in BSOD? The weird thing is that everything was OK for a year, then a couple of h/w changes, and it all collapses, then reinstall s/w and it comes right.:annoyed: Tony (4941)
703147 2008-09-20 07:28:00 As far as I can see, you did no HDD diagnostics, perhaps there was (is) a problem there? feersumendjinn (64)
703148 2008-09-20 07:35:00 As far as I can see, you did no HDD diagnostics, perhaps there was (is) a problem there?I ran chkdsk with no errors. I tried installing the Seatools suite, but got the BSOD whenever I tried the install! I also formatted the partition every time I reinstalled the OS, which was quite a few times over the course of this exercise. If there was an HDD problem, I think it is unlikely it would spontaneously heal itself. :) Tony (4941)
703149 2008-09-23 11:22:00 I am so sick of this. I now have a replacement mobo. When I try to boot, the fans go, the mobo LED lights up but nothing else happens - no beeps, no POST, no lights on any of the drives - nothing. I've checked all the connections, cleared the CMOS - no difference.

I took it out and reinstalled the old mobo and it powered up and booted OK. Reinstalled the new one - no good. Please don't tell me this mobo is DOA - but it certainly looks like it.

One other odd thing - when I power it up, sometimes it will respond to the power off switch on the front after > 6secs, but sometimes it only powers off by the switch on the back.

Aaaaarrrrgh!

703150 2008-09-23 11:35:00 Since nothing works did you connect the ATX 12v adapter from the PSU as well?

Does the case have a speaker so you can hear it beep?? If it doesnt you wont hear anything.

Sounds like the front power switch is sticking or stuffed

Its not to healthy turning it off at the back switch either. It wont make things any better

Sounds like the front power switch is sticking or stuffedI wondered about that. However that wouldn't explain why the old mobo booted OK when I re-installed it. I also noticed since I posted, that sometimes when it powers on, the DVD and Floppy lights do come on, and that is when it will turn off via the front switch.

703152 2008-09-23 20:51:00 Your problem sounds like one I was working on yesterday
One other odd thing - when I power it up, sometimes it will respond to the power off switch on the front after > 6secs, but sometimes it only powers off by the switch on the back. I see by your first post you have a new Power Supply - it may be faulty - as the one I was having problems with was fine after putting in a new PSU - may pay to change it ( even for an older one) and see if the problem is still there.

703153 2008-10-03 18:31:00 I'm probably tempting fate by writing this, but I think my problems are solved. The system has certainly been stable for a week now, although I haven't been doing any serious work on it.

I looks like the issue might have been memory after all. I originally had 2 x 1gB sticks of AData 800mhz DDR2 memory, and had bought two more - of nominally the same spec. After some experimentation I found that they are very picky about which memory slots they go into. If I have all four installed, the system runs dual-channel, and they have to be installed as matched pairs for it to be stable. It was only when I was fiddling around that I noticed that the PCB configuration on the two pairs was different, and once I matched them up, things went smoothly. I was fooled by the supposed identical spec, and hadn't made any effort to make sure they were matched. That would also explain why the system was sometimes OK and sometimes not - it just depended on how many and in what order I had inserted the memory sticks.

The whole issue was also complicated by the fact that the replacement mobo I got was in fact faulty and is now back with Ascent.

I would like to publicly acknowledge the tremendous help I have received from Cameron Silvester of Ascent Technology - he has certainly gone the extra mile in helping me get this sorted out.

Thanks also to all the PressF1-ers who helped out as well.

I now have enough spare parts to build another PC - but whether that is a good or a bad thing I haven't quite decided!

703154 2008-10-23 08:56:00 I'm tempting fate by saying this, but I seem to have a working PC at last. The saga that started towards the beginning of August is finally drawing to close - I hope.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions and advice, and once again much appreciation to the people at Ascent Technology for all the help I got there.
