2008-09-10 18:06:00 | Yep- if you have an old PC that works laying around gathering dust, put it to good use - they make good NAS storage devices, dont need to have a large CPU or RAM - One I have which I used to use before I got WHS was about a whooping Celeron 1.0 with about 256 Mb memory. wainuitech, thanks I assume WHS= windows home server? My business could afford that if it is a good solution. Could I place my old box, which needs a new MoB and wireless card(??$) in my next door room(otherwise to much noise) and work through remote desktop? Could I then backup my MBP(os x) and the Fusion Vm (xp guest)seperatly to that machine? Is that an option?

2008-09-10 21:33:00 | To confirm what SolMiester posted - Wireless is prob not a good Idea, I know in the earlier versions, Beta & RC's some people did try, but it was to unreliable. To be honest I have never tried it with wireless, I have always installed them with a Ethernet cable and never had any problems. Never had any problems streaming Movies or music from mine between the workshop & lounge and other PC's in the house, even while the PC's were backing up and a movie playing at the same time. I installed one in a small business, they have six PC's all connecting to it, as their main working files are on the server, and 1 printer - not the actual PC's they work from, never any lag, and they are all set to back up the whole six PC's every morning at 2 am. I log in remotely once a week at their request and do off site backups to my other server here. Mine here are set to back up daily at 8pm. As for remote desktop - you really dont need it, it has a built in console that allows you to add folders, administrator the unit from any desktop thats connected (password protected of course). BUT on the odd occasion if you do need the actual desktop I use a program called TeamViewer (www.teamviewer.com). Mine runs headless - meaning no keyboard/mouse or monitor, apart from the original setup and once last year I have not even been into it. Just for you  I logged in ( had to remember the Password, that was awkward but I Finally remembered (www.imagef1.net.nz) Just looked on the Windows home Server site (www.microsoft.com) - they have added a whole lot of additional plugins - might be time to have a "play" ;) The best feature I like is the backups - saved me a couple of times when I had this PC's drive fail - twice in 6 months :( Ran the recovery CD that comes with the OS and about 20 minutes later all back up and going again on a new drive, all data, programs every thing back as if nothing happened, all I lost was a couple off emails.

2008-09-11 08:31:00 | Wainuitech and Solmiester After reading the posts it looks more convincing to try reusing my old machine, better said the box, with a new MB and also new HDD's and go with WHS The only sticky point is that I will then have to lay network-cable. Not many meters but still a bit of a pain. Also, would it work with my MBP(os x)

2008-09-11 09:18:00 | Honestly can say I Have never tried attaching a MAC - BUT according to the WHS site Here (www.microsoft.com) the 4th from the bottom question up - Mac users have the ability to save to and remotely access Windows Home Server. The Windows Home Server Console and pre-configured PC automatic backups works on Windows Vista and Windows XP Regarding the networking - No Idea what your house is like but if I have to go from room to room in customers places - as long as you can get under the house, run cables under the floor, then all you see is a mounting box in the room with a short Patch cable from the mount to the PC/Server.Example of Mine (www.imagef1.net.nz) - thats 4 attachments but you get the idea if only one - those 4 come from the router, which in turn goes the lounge to feed another switch feeding 2 PC's, the Mrs PC and Media Center, Another to my sons room, another two out to the workshop with 1 going to a 8 port switch which feeds my workstations WHS and wireless access point and the other feeding another 5 port switch to another server and a Temp workstation ( must finish that in the one day plan :) ) . You can of course get nice small floor mounts Something like this (www.imagef1.net.nz) instead of the bigger ones I have. Wiring them up is no big deal, the hardest part is crawling under a house dragging a wire & making sure you dont drill down through a floor joist or any other cables/pipes, its only a 10mm approx hole.

2008-09-11 09:28:00 | wainuitech thanks for taking all that time and even take pictures. No luck about the floor as it is concrete and similar(closed of) to the ceiling. I just have to thing how to go about now. If it works with my MBP(os x ) I will find a way for the cable or go the way kersonan suggested(just a bit more costly) but hardly any work involved! I'll go and search if I can backup my os x. A million thanks to you guys :thanks

2008-09-11 09:36:00 | OK still easy if concrete floor - As long as the floors got carpet - with the mount on the ground, see if the edge of the carpet can be lifted slightly, then you tuck the cable right down the at the edge - hardly noticeable and out of the way. Going through the wall - a flat wall mount plate either side with a short piece of cable 1/4 mtr - Concrete wall as well I bet :crying

Yeah they come in pairs, and are pretty much plug and go, even works on the multiplug boards. they are perfect for rental properties or anywhere where making holes in stuff isn't cool. |
