| 703662 | 2008-09-09 04:44:00 | I've decided to do a clean reinstallation of my os. I've got one question though. If i install my os on a 500gb hard drive, could i partition it into 2 drives keeping 1 partition for os ONLY and the 2nd partition for PROGRAM FILES? Meaning, would programs still work if not installed in same 'drive' as os? Because this way i assume it would be easier for future reinstallations as you can just reinstall os on one partition and leave program files in tact. Is my assumption correct? Thanks That will work, but the question is, is it the best way to organise your files? I used to do the same thing, but gave it up. My reasoning was as follows: When you install an application under Windows, almost always (with a few honourable exceptions) changes are made in the registry, and auxiliary files are installed in Documents & Settings and separate folders in My Programs. These are essential to the running of the application you have installed. The simplest way to back up your system is to make an image of the C: drive with something like Acronis True Image, but if you place your application files on, say, the D: drive you must image both partitions at the same time to preserve the correspondence between all the associated files. If you install to the C: drive you need only back that one up to preserve your applications. Of course, you can still put your documents on another partition, and there are good arguments for doing that. |

It might take longer to reinstall all the programs back, but this is a simple way to keep the system clean, and have less compatibility problems. Having programs cleanly reinstalled, rather than fixing a half-working program from the old system is probably easier IMHO. |
