What the hell would it have on it that you would need use shredder programs on, + anyone who wants an old computer like that probally wouldnt have a clue or even knew you could retreive the formated information.

468790 2006-07-05 12:52:00 OK. But how can recover the data once the HDD is formatted?
I copied your post into google and got more answers than your likely to be able to read.

468792 2006-07-05 20:46:00 How to clean a disk was covered in the old FAQs and is still available Here (faqf1.net.nz it_can%27t_be_recovered) on the new FAQF1.

Memo to Bruce or other PCW IT types, it would be really helpful if a proper link to FAQF1 was provided on the main page rather than the present convoluted path via the sticky. Perhaps it could link (prominently) off the FAQ page which now covers only administrative issues.

Cheers

468793 2006-07-05 21:16:00 Would anyone in this forum have anything on their computer that is of such vital interest that someone would go to the trouble and expense of trying to recover it from a formatted disk?

I would say not.

All this talk of shredders and multiple formats and destroying the disk are just so much nonsense.

All that is needed for 99.999% of the population is a simple format. :badpc:

C'mon Jack, allow us our illusions. :D

Maybe one day MTlance will learn to drive, own a Ferrarorghini and look back in horror on the naivety of his posts here.

Dreams are free.

P.S. Have you started writing your memoirs yet? I'd be at the book launch with my credit card preheated. I reckon it would be a good read.

Ir's not possable to write anything in these forums without upsetting someone. So don't worry about it. You say what you like.

If you realy goof up Bruce will let you know.

468797 2006-07-06 04:01:00 Alternatively put the harddisk near a very strong magnet. :D KiwiTT_NZ (233)
468798 2006-07-06 04:09:00 A format and reinstall will delete everything to an adequate standard . Has any of those who say data can be easily recovered after this actually done it?

Deleting the Windows directory from DOS doesn't give any protection; but a format (with surface check) will be good enough .
