468640 2006-07-05 01:01:00 Of course we could obey the rules and put hundreds of the boys back on the beat.Except the boys aren't on the beat. They're raping our women and beating up on innocents in lower decile suburbs.

I ask - when was the last time you saw a cop on the street. Ahem. Moi? Not in any of the 24 years I've lived in New Zealand.

468641 2006-07-05 01:33:00 i.e. The least amount of accidents, deaths, murders, burglaries, rapes, etc.

Having policing targets based on a higher number of offences is simply wrong.

All police processes, should be setup to measure reductions in crime not increases in offences.

468642 2006-07-05 01:51:00 Re: Do the police think we're stupid? Yes JJJ* they probably do. It must be like shooting fish in a barrell when they want to score a few more. Until we generally see 100 kph as the maximum instead of a nice average on the highways they will just keep at it I suppose. Of course we could obey the rules and put hundreds of the boys back on the beat.

Not for 1 second. They would look for other ways to make revenue. i.e blocking of motorway on ramps and going over cars with a fine tooth comb, Same on city streets and maybe creating a few offenses to take your money from you.

Unfortunatly here in AK it seems like the loons get away with every thing and the little old lady gets done for 5 or 6 K over the speed limit

468644 2006-07-05 05:14:00 Is this why you haven't had any tickets lately? Do you think you should be still driving????? :)

Of course I shouldn't. But my doctor passed me as fit enough to drive so I got my license renewed.a couple of months ago. So keep out of my road, I ignore traffic just point the car in the right direction and pity anyone who gets in my way.

468645 2006-07-05 05:28:00 KiwiTt has it right:
. . . All police processes, should be setup to measure reductions in crime not increases in offences .

But . The statistics are capable of being fiddled . The number of "reported" crimes in each category can be altered radically by police managers by changing the emphasis . If they want stricter drug laws, suddenly there is a surge in drug "offences" .

Managements "need" productivity measurements . They have to be countable things . They need to have no relationship with the real function of an organisation, but if they can be counted (or costed) they will be . The system can collapse, but it's got wonderful management if all the paper looks good . any failures are obviously the fault of the lower levels (or the customers) .

This is what has caused the sad state of all the Public Services we used to have . They've got lots of managers, all brought up in the management schools . The people who do the work spend so much time on paperwork to feed managers that they have little time to do the work .

468646 2006-07-05 06:56:00 OK, I drive for a living around Auckland and I have noticed an increase in speed cameras set up- not where the accident 'black spots' are, but where there there is a higher chance of drivers speeding on a straight piece of road . That looks like revenue gathering to me .

I have done an advanced driving course, so I am hopefully more 'aware' than most of what is going on around me on the roads and I see far more accidents caused by drivers doing stupid things than accidents caused by speeding .

Being fined for speeding isn't going to stop me, it's 'just money' and is tax deductable anyway . What makes me think twice is getting demerit points .

I would be more than happy if the Police started handing out demerit points for unsafe lane changes, not indicating and using cellphones while driving- believe me these things cause nasty accidents! . People might start thinking that there are actual consequences when their license might be taken off them instead of some money .
