703726 2008-09-08 21:32:00 Yesterday I couldn't open a new email. As soon as I tried, I got the dreaded Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience etc box.

Since then I have tried every bit of computer maintenance I know:Antivirus scan, Spybot and Ad Aware scans, chkdsk scan. I even sent the Error Report to Microsoft!

All to no avail - this morning the problem is still there

I'd very much appreciate any advice - the more the better! I';ll be checking the forum periodically and following any advice I'm capable of, and I'll post success as soon as I get some!

703727 2008-09-08 21:37:00 Is it Outlook or OE?

There's a difference. If its Outlook, run it in safe mode (If its 2002 +). Press / hold Ctrl down / then run Outlook.

Then delete the email, if it's there

703728 2008-09-08 23:39:00 Thanks for the response, SG. Sorry, I should have made it clearer - it's MS Outlook 2003, XP Professional.

I don't want to delete anything - the problem occurs when I try to open any email, both new unread messages, and old messages that have previously opened.

703729 2008-09-08 23:47:00 Something is probably corrupted then

You could try this (support.microsoft.com)

It may or may not work

Depending on how many emails you've got as the above site says, the pst file has a 2 GB size limit

703730 2008-09-09 11:34:00 Run the "Detect and repair" option under Tools. You'll need the disk though. That has sorted similar problems for me.

I have had to run it up to four times in a row for some issues but it has always produced a result in the end.

Tip: If your HDD locks up and Task Manager reports "Outlook not responding" just go away and leave it for up to an hour, I have found that my Outlook does that occasionally and (for me) it always sorts itself out inside of 10-15 minutes.

Check in task Manager and make sure only one iteration of Outlook is running too, I get up to 4 running sometimes, god knows how, and that can stuff things up. Just close any extras.

Cheers

703731 2008-09-12 03:42:00 Thanks BT - Detect and Repair did the trick. And the disk (which took me some days to locate) wasn't even required! :) colmack (2939)
