2008-09-08 04:00:00 | I use Windows 98 and am upgrading to XP shortly. I want to copy or move a number of old emails (hundreds) from Outlook Express in-box or other folders in O.E. so that I can put them on a CD. I can move attachments (such as photos) to My Documents but can not get email texts to move. If I do get one through they do not open as the message as follows appears....."the documents format is invalid or not supported'. I have an external hard drive and a micro vault (both USB connections) which I have used to move files from My Documents - surely there is some way to do likewise with Outlook Express documents? Can someone please help.

2008-09-08 04:16:00 | Outlook express stores files differently than Outlook and stores them under local settings of the username, so you need to know where to go to copy the original mailbox files. However, there is a much easier method via exporting the messages. I havent used OE for Win 98 in a very long time but are fairly sure it had the export option then...... If not, look for a program called something like Outlook express backup....there are several programs that will do it for you.... edit - here you go, download the free version... www.amicutilities.com

Have done that and the back up is now in My Documents. Or I presume so as the file size created is now 150 MB. But I can't open any to read....says the file is 'archive' - does that mean they cant be read until they are reinstalled - perhaps on another computer? Be good if you can add a bit more advice for me. Thanks. AJ |

2008-09-08 11:17:00 | Im sure the utility came with some sort of readme file or instructions....when you get your new pc, use the program again to restore the mail contained in the backup file to your new e-mail program..you wont be able to open any of the messages until they are unpacked from the compressed backup file... | SolMiester (139) | |
2008-09-08 15:33:00 | OE files are have a .dbx suffix and you'll only be able to see them once you've imported them to your new OE. Should work fine. | Winston001 (3612) | |
