468219 2006-07-03 21:39:00 In May 2006, PC World gave Gigabyte's i-RAM 5/10. Think of it - a 'hard drive' that uses RAM. Imagine installing Windows to it, I mean, booting so fast you can't see the bootup screen (i.e. boot time limited only by the motherboard). :waughh: Instant defragging the Windows drive. But of course, boot time is slowed when the battery runs out!

A fresh install of Windows XP w/o SP1 or SP2 takes up less than 1GB. In order to get the most out of it, 4GB would have to be installed (my Windows install is 2.05GB over 4 months).

468220 2006-07-03 22:51:00 Windows boot-up speed alone is definitly no use for iRAM. The only time I could ever imagine it to be of benefit is for gaming, especially fps styles, and then only one game at a time. Any other application of it is a waste. Greg (193)
468221 2006-07-04 02:44:00 A lot of the boot time is spent "thinking" about what it's doing. Acorn computers have been booted from ROM for many years. It's not immediate. Graham L (2)

468225 2006-07-04 08:27:00 the thing is tho..hardrive speeds havn't kept pace with the speed of the pc's. now we have ghz cpus, near on ghz ram, way faster bus speeds, faster connections to the hardrive but still the humble hardrive is slowing it all down hence the attraction of RAID setups. solid state hardrives would be so nice if they wen't so darn exspencive. tweak'e (69)
468226 2006-07-04 09:43:00 Why not use a RAMDrive for your most used applications. Well especially games.

You can still do it using WinXP. Now admittedly a RAMDrive will lose all info on a reboot but if you leave the computer on 24/7 and don't install other stuff every 5 minutes it seems like a good solution.

As I have 4 gigs RAM I have been looking into this and will try it out in the next week or two.

This will not help slow booting though. :-(
