704327 2008-09-11 02:28:00 I have scored a computer from my son in law and find that there is a problem that prevents the machine from Booting from the CD Drive.
When one goes into the BIOS, one notices that the machine only appears to recognise the DVD Drive, which is in fact a new one I fitted - it does not recognise the CD drive, so it is not possible to set the machine to boot from the CD Drive, although one can load CDs through the drive no problem.
The Motherboard is a ASUS P5AD2-Deluxe.
Any ideas on how to sort.

Do you mean that it has 2 separate drives or it won't boot from a CD in the DVD drive?

704330 2008-09-11 03:06:00 Just use the DVD drive to boot from the CD disc.

If you still want to use the CD drive, check the IDE cable and the power cable that they are fitted properly on both ends.

704331 2008-09-11 04:26:00 Yes the computer has two separate Drives
A Liteon DVD SATA Drive which I fitted in replacement of a HP IDE CD Drive that had failed, plus a Sony CD Drive that works perfectly well under windows, and which we used to load all the programs on the machine. The problem is that the BIOS does not recognise the SONY CD Drive.
What we planned to do was to Boot from the Sony CD Drive with a Linux Imaging program in that drive and take an Image of the programs, especially XP Pro and burn that to a DVD. The benefit of this is that one has a snapshot of the operating system with all the windows updates etc, if ever one has to reload windows . I can't say I know a lot about it but the concept seems great.
As this process does not use windows as we are taking an image of it - to do the process it is necessary for the BIOS to recognise the Sony CD drive so that we can set the BIOS to boot from that drive.
Your help and ideas appreciated.

704332 2008-09-11 05:28:00 Check the jumpers on the CD drive. Try it with it set to master, as the only device on the cable. ubergeek85 (131)
704333 2008-09-11 08:25:00 Out the CD in the 2nd CD\DVD optical drive an boot from that!....LOL SolMiester (139)
704334 2008-09-11 22:05:00 Thanks for the advice, To image the operating system we need both the CD drive and the DVD drive working as the Linux CD is in that drive and the programs being imaged are burnt to a DVD. The benefit is that one has a virginal image so to say of the operating system with all updates, etc in case one has at anytime to reload the operating system.

So disconnecting the DVD drive and making the CD drive master won't achieve this object, I will try it with the CD drive as master and the DVD as secondary
