704320 2008-09-11 02:12:00 Hi there,

I have a laptop which I use to access the internet when at home via plugging in to the broadband modem. When I go away from home for work trips or visiting family in another city I would like to access the internet but without using my hosts dial-up phone line. I have an Okta Touch cell phone and am wondering if it is an option to use this as my modem to connect to the internet via a usb type cable? Is this a feasible option or would I be better to get one of those mobile data devices like the T-stick or Vodem? I would not be a high user as I just want to check email and minor browsing when away from home.

Can anyone give me some guidance on the differences in the two options or is using a cell phone 'old hat' and not as good - in terms of performance and cost? I have no knowledge of this type of technology.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check data costs though.

I will need to look into the plans available. My Okta Touch cell phone is Telecom so I am assuming any plan will be a Telecom one.

704323 2008-09-11 05:39:00 Vodaphone offers a service to use 3G phones as a modem(dial up with broadband speed) which is priced at $1 per 10mb. The best thing about it is that you only pay for what you use. I assume Telecom will offer something similar-this will be very pricey if you use more than 30mb a day though. Blam (54)
704324 2008-09-11 08:21:00 Our company has several T3G cards which through the years has changed in purchase price for the hardware cards themselves with the plans & competition.
With such a low purchase price now of the t-stick, Telecoms data plans must be 1st on your list of options.

And no, I dont work for telecom, however I do think they have the best coverage for wireless in NZ.

Yeah thats the sort of thing you need to check first .
Thats $100 a GB . Pretty horrendous .
There are some flat rate plans that are better, so long as you don't go over the limit .
