704218 2008-09-10 08:00:00 Hi All I am a bit confused. Ok a bit more than usual!!!

Windows XP is an OS that is installed on a computer & is a mixed bag of operations. Word, Outlook Express etc. Everything you want to do. It is SAVED on your own computer.

Chrome by Google is not like that is it? Chrome has similar functions collectively as Windows. But. All the data is on Googles computer, not mine.

Have I got that right?? PJ:confused:

Google's Chrome is another Web browser, similar to Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera.

But Google does have a suite of online applications you described: email, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation.

The data from those application are stored in Google's Data Centers on Google's computers.

I think that this answers my question.

Why would you trust all your data to another computer? Whatever application I want to use, I want the results to be held by me.

Windows has no REAL competition, as yet. PJ

No you've got it wrong, and have not read the replies correctly PJ. Windows whatever version is an OS, thats it, nothing to do with browsers. All that other Word etc stuff are applications free or otherwise that you can add on top of your OS. Don't compare Windows to almost anything except linux (or Mac) or you're comparing apples to chipmunks. I ain't tried Chrome yet but it's an internet browser isn't it? All it would store elsewhere would be bookmarks I would have thought.
Google does have a suite of Google Apps that often store stuff elsewhere.
Microsoft has a bunch of Apps that either cost too much or don't work that well (or both).
Yes Windows has no real competition as yet but that doesn't make it great

Well, some people have no problems with storing and hosting documents online. Google Docs and Spreadsheets are very handy if you want multiple people working on the same document at the same time and also if you want your documents accessible and editable from any computer anywhere in the world.

Considering all the personal details, pictures, blogs etc that people have out in the open, Google Docs is a very minor issue in terms of privacy.

That is a matter of perspective - just look at how many Linux queries we're starting to see here on PF1. And look at what is deployed as the default OS on many netbooks (Asus's eee for example) etc too.

Errr, windows?...LOL.

Sorry bud, windows is for users, linux is for geeks....

704227 2008-09-10 23:45:00 It is? Last time I looked at the netbook market (although I'll admit that was a while ago) it was a customised Xandros Linux (eee) or Ubuntu, with Windows running a poor second. Has this now changed? Erayd (23)
