703939 2008-09-09 10:21:00 this afternoon i boot up my lappy and it told me that windows has recovered from a unexpected reboot, but i don't know why.

I remember that when I turn it off I also started unplugging USB keyboard and mouse at the same time and then the blue screen of death came up for about a second, then it rebooted itself.

when i turn it on this afternoon it tell me that windows can't find any anti-virus software on the computer, but he problem is i have had AVG on my laptop since last year and it is still running properly, updated to the latest version of course.

I am using Vista Business 32 bits, with AVG and spybot.

what is wrong with my lappy? why is it not happy with AVG anymore?

windows also tells me that windows defender is turned off. I tried to turn it on and it try to download "new definitions" but can't find any, then it stays off.:badpc: what can I do to turn it back on again?

any sort of help will be greatly appreciated.

703940 2008-09-09 10:40:00 If every thing was Ok the day before try running system Restore back 1 day - sometimes if you remove USB devices and something is not quite right it will cause a crash, kind of short circuits - this may have somehow damaged the system files since it was in the process of shutting down- the worst possible time. You should ALWAYS remove USB devices either when the PC/Laptop is turned off, or by remove hardware safely option.

To run restore in Vista click the start Orb, in the search type in Restore Select System Restore, when it opens ( sometimes takes a minute or two) ---( part of this wording is from memory - not on a Vista OS at the moment to be 100% )

Down the bottom select " select a different restore point", it will show a list of points, if one is not there from the previous time it was going OK, select "show restore points older than five days" or words to that effect, select one from the previous day, run the restore, you wont lose any work/ documents etc, just winds back the system to that time - let it reboot, might take a little longer than usual, but don't stop it once it starts - let it do its thing.

703943 2008-09-09 10:54:00 :dogeye: :dogeye: it said that No restore point have been created on my computer . . . . . . and it gives me the option of creating one now, which will not help . . .

I thought Vista is cleaver enough to create restore points automatically but apparently not!!! :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

what should I do now? thnks

703944 2008-09-09 10:59:00 hmmm Vista should create restore points by default unless its been turned off of course.

Ok Try this start orb / run type in sfc /scannow Press Enter - it will scan your system for faults - you may need your Vista DVD if it was installed from one ( Ie: not a name brand PC) if the run option is not there, in the search type in run Press enter - that will bring up the run box.

703948 2008-09-10 04:49:00 Try installing Avast, and dump AVG, its better anyway, and this sort of bypasses the problem. SPARTAN 860 (2618)
