471232 2006-07-16 02:05:00 My lawnmower starts, but stops about 5 minutes later. It's hard to restart again. But once started, it stops again after 5 minutes or less. Had sent it for servicing but problem still persists. Anyone knows what the cause could be and how to resolve it? Lawnmower runs on petrol. Engine is about 3-4 years old. Help needed. Taurus (9579)

Not lawnmower engines but the diagnostic principles are the same.

In the olden days of motorbike magneto ignition, that sort of fault happening when hot was a symptom of the secondary winding of the magneto failing.
I'd still bet the problem could be the ignition coil failure.

Otherwise there could be a vapour lock.

471235 2006-07-16 03:01:00 Make sure the vent hole in the petrol tank is clear.

Is it a two-stroke? Are you using too much oil in the mix? Anyway, check the spark plug for fouling.

It's either fuel or ignition. :D

If the plug was fouling it wouldn't restart until cleaned.

Doesn't really sound like an ignition problem, it is more likely to be fuel starvation and I reckon you are closer to the mark with the vent hole or similar.

Does it just cut out dead and stop as if switched off, or misfire a bit as it winds down?

Cheers

471237 2006-07-16 03:20:00 Is the fuel flowing through at a slower rate than its using. So it runs until the fuel is gone. Stops, and while its stop the fuel is replenishing, and away it goes again...

(I am probably paraphrasing what has been said before )

471238 2006-07-16 03:21:00 Try adjusting the carb mixture screw. Turn it out about a 1/4 to 1/2 a turn.

471239 2006-07-16 04:16:00 For a short while mine did the same thing. I found out that the throttle moved ever so slightly after a few minutes of running. It was just enough to cut the engine.
Just adjusting the cable a bit solved the problem.

471240 2006-07-16 04:30:00 2 stroke or 4 stroke ??

oil . . is there enough . it could be siezeing and starting after its cooled down .

water in the fuel . . . . causes all sorts of fun .

Then take it back and tell them they haven't sorted it .
