471021 2006-07-15 08:40:00 I bought a ballcock valve a few months ago to replace a worn one on our header tank. Decided to fit it today at long last. Brand is "Plumb It" purchased from Mitre 10. Rudimentary instructions.

Anyway, after fitting it and turning the water on again, I discovered to my horror that there is a small hole in the side of the valve assembly. Looks deliberate rather than a defect. Consequently water sprayed in a majestic continuous jet across the roof space liberally dousing the batts.

No thread in the hole, and water only stops when the valve closes. I've never come across this design and wondered if anyone here can explain it. Currently it is useless so I had to reinstall the old one. Humph. :help:

471022 2006-07-15 08:56:00 Not sure its deliberate though, Winston.

I have one here that developed a similar hole a year or two after being fitted, but on the top of the assembly, not the side as yours is. That resulted in the spray pelting the roof of the header tank, which then trickled down the tank sides and slowly dripped out the tray overflow under the soffit, alerting me to the problem.

The new one I used had no such hole, and I was told it was a moulding defect that finally gave way, it was quite a neatly formed hole. It was blamed on "cheap rubbish imports" by the plumbing supplier.

Good photo though .... did you get Cicero to pop down with his new camera?

471024 2006-07-15 09:56:00 Not an informative response I know but I have had a ballcock on my header tank for 16 years and works fine. I did get it from the same plumbing co. that made up the tank.

PS Take it back.

Very good suggestion and I'll keep it in mind . At the moment I'm going back to Mitre 10 but naturally the receipt is long gone .

And I used my trusty Canon A70 for the pic .

471026 2006-07-15 11:17:00 Mitre10 will generally be happy to replace the part for a new one, without a receipt (I've done that a few times), but they won't refund it without one. somebody (208)
471027 2006-07-15 14:42:00 At first I thought it was some sort of release mechanism, but I take it that water comes in from the left in the pic, and when the ballcock raises, the internal diaphram covers the hole? It looks to me like such a clean hole that it was meant to be there but doesn't make sense at all given the position of the lever mechanism.

My guess is to agree with what others said and say it's a defect in manufacture.

Is the valve part of a science project - as per the file name? :D

471028 2006-07-15 23:01:00 Actually, I think it's a "lawyers special" valve.

In that while performing it's function, it still manages to pee all over the client?

Or is that a little harsh perhaps...?

471029 2006-07-16 00:40:00 What a coincidence, we bought the same unit from Mitre10 to replace the whisper ballcock and it promptly sprayed water out through the cistern cover all over the place, from the hole on the side.

Took it back and got a refund, until a rplacement was forth coming.

Only thing wrong with the whisper was the little flat washer which we replaced and it's running fine.

Went down to a funeral in Dunedin last Monday, went out to Mosgiel to see a brother and noticed my watch battery had gone flat, so while we waited for it to be fixed we went into Mitre10 and took a look at the brass ballcocks in stock and noticed that they all have this hole in the side.

Needless to say we will not be accepting the replacement either.

Lurking.

We aim to please.... ;)

Went back to Mitre 10 who were very pleasant. Just as Lurking says, all the other valves were the same, although the holes varied in size. They gave me a refund.

I can only speculate that the hole is to release air bubbles and avoid hammering/knocking while the cistern fills. In a toilet cistern with a lid, water might not escape but then again it might........ Silly design IMHO.
