470119 2006-07-12 11:34:00 Seriously... Who here has actually ever rung MS for '98 support?! I dont know ANYBODY who has!

For Windows 95, I rang them up with one of those buggy no brand network cards. The thing just didn't want to work until you did something that pulled its strings. MS didn't even provide a 0800 number, it was a 09 number being a non Aucklander. They also had daytime calling only so we just rang them without having any special toll dialing with Telecom. 30min call that got it to work by then ...

We have a Win95a that was updated to Win98 like earlier this year. We will still keep it as its not fast enough for WinXP or Vista or Win2k. The old scanner attached to it only supports win9x so we will keep it until we get a new scanner. Since it is still working replacing a modern scanner is not high prority.

I guess Win2k is next queued up, I have had this since 2001 and still using it.

I guess companies would need to upgrade to continue receiving support

470120 2006-07-12 12:21:00 I used to use W2k but since it was a bootleg version... but now I've paid for a copy of XP Pro which I got through MIT when I was still a student there.

Now, when XP is no longer supported, its hello to linux :D

470121 2006-07-12 15:56:00 C'mon, guys!

All you think about is M$ profits, when the exact opposite is the truth!

Think of it this way:

Mr . Bill has new, shiny, expensive things waiting in the wings, true!

However . . . . . . . . the drag and resourse-gobbling support of 95, 98 etc, take a terrible toll on the almighty M$ dollars .

Just having geeks sitting at desks in Richmond taking calls from old fartheads who stick with a dead horse and need to find a way to run with the big boys and 2000 and XP with tweaks and fine-tuning requests, cost lots of money .

Think of all the telephones and desks and chairs and pencils and pads of paper and Twinkies and Red Bull that is needed to support these geeks!

Now, we all know that a company runs on money, not talent, and if we don't want to see Mr . Bill and his wife diving into dumpsters retreiving aluminum cans and plastic bottles to cash them in for money to feed themselves, some serious re-thinking on behalf of people here reading this, needs to be done .

I, for one (the line forms over here>>>>> X ) do not want to see such a sad thing as two people going through such a horrible experience as most of the occupants of third-world countries do every day .

Having compassion for people so thrust into that degrading lifestyle from their gilded cage existance would surely break the heart of anyone viewing it too .

Let's all do our individual part and keep Bill outta the garbage dumps and from behind our restaurants and quick-serve stores: Buy Vista!

Keep the world a happy place .

470122 2006-07-12 16:50:00 I wouldn't have switched from chugging along happily on 98SE if I'd had to buy XP.
It's just that my new (2nd-hand ) computer came with it loaded.

So the idea of moving to Vista shortly seems as daft to me as buying another fridge - just to have Fisher & Paykel's latest model.

(Hmmm...How many years before I can get it already-loaded on my next second-hand comp?
But more to the point, will I want it even then..?)

470123 2006-07-12 21:38:00 If win 98 still needs more security patches it's time it was dumped anyway.

It's obsolete.

Do you still expect support for DOS too?

Well yes actually. Ever hear of DOS 6.22 Y2K version. We still have new hardware here that runs Y2K complient DOS 6.22 and it's still supported by MS..

I'm amazed. I still have the disks for DOS 6.2.
Might need them one day when MS gets completely buggered up.

When? You need them now, Jack. :D

I run some software which runs only under DOS or Windows9X. All I need for much other software I use is a programme loader. Operating systems are just an unwanted waste of CPU and memory. Less is always better.

Who needs "3D Desktops" ?

470126 2006-07-13 09:19:00 Support for the software was originally due to end in 2003, but was extended following customer protests.

Which would be the same as ending support for Windows XP now... 5 years is a bit early, no wonder they protested.

470127 2006-07-13 11:16:00 So do you have 5 seperate copies of xp or run it on one machine at a time or do the obvious :D

Thanks for asking - all my PC's pass the Windows Genuine Advantage checks - what more can I say.
