704228 2008-09-10 23:55:00 Windows has no REAL competition, as yet. PJI don't know that Apple would agree with you. They make a rather popular operating system called Mac OS X (www.apple.com). :) maccrazy (6741)
704229 2008-09-11 00:31:00 It is? Last time I looked at the netbook market (although I'll admit that was a while ago) it was a customised Xandros Linux (eee) or Ubuntu, with Windows running a poor second. Has this now changed?

Ah, your talking about EEE pc, yes thats linux, however MOST notebooks have windose....

I was taking the piss with ya!!...

No.
Windows is the operating system.

Word, etc is part of MS Office - an application suite. Purchased separately although you may find a trial version on a PC.

Both are by MS.

However there are other (free) application suites around too. Online ones and install ones.

704233 2008-09-11 00:57:00 Hi All I am a bit confused. Ok a bit more than usual!!!

Windows XP is an OS that is installed on a computer & is a mixed bag of operations. Word, Outlook Express etc. Everything you want to do. It is SAVED on your own computer.

Chrome by Google is not like that is it? Chrome has similar functions collectively as Windows. But. All the data is on Googles computer, not mine.

Have I got that right?? PJ:confused:

Actually I think you're almost right in a way.

Google or wikipedia "Cloud Computing".

Google's slowly moving a lot of traditionally OS based tasks online, and while chrome is just a browser, if it starts linking in with google docs/calendar/gears then it's starting to look like traditional uses for the OS are coming under threat.

You still need an OS to use chrome, but it just makes some of the OS features that little bit redundant.

:D. I was talking about netbooks, not notebooks. The former is the standard term used to refer to all those ultralight, low spec, cheap things like the eee. Why do you think MS has been panicking about them? It's a whole segment of the market that they don't perform well on...
