Quelle droll. The pic filed itself in my daughters science project folder - my fault, I should have renamed it before posting. Live and learn.

471032 2006-07-16 11:54:00 I can only speculate that the hole is to release air bubbles and avoid hammering/knocking while the cistern fills. In a toilet cistern with a lid, water might not escape but then again it might........ Silly design IMHO.

The hole is to prevent the water siphoning back into the pipe if the mains pressure drops. The valves often have a pipe going below water level to quieten the noise of the water. The Spartan Engineering samples I have had the hole pointing down at the water.

Doesn't your header tank have a lid?

Yep - correct. I remember having this problem nearly 50 years ago in our first house. A brand new house I was irritated by the noise the hole made. Then I discovered that these holes were common in all British houses of that period in fact were a legal requirement. I forget how I did it but I did something to reduce the noise level and of course the cistern did have a lid which stops any splashing etc. If you have an open cistern in your house then it is a good idea to provide a lid. I worked in Public Health for some time and it wasnt only dead mice that could be found in cisterns left open but even cats.
