Mozilla has released the download of the first beta of its Firefox 2.0 browser a few days early. Originally scheduled for an 11 July release, some users found the 5.4 MB release candidate file on Mozilla's public FTP servers already Sunday night.

Don't expect dramatic changes, but rather subtle improvements in Firefox' user interface. For example, the "Options" menu has been reorganized and every browser tab now carries its own "Close" symbol - instead of showing the logo on the right edge of the browser tab. During our first test run, the beta appeared to run stable, but - as all Firefox updates - may require updated versions of previously installed browser extensions.

469886 2006-07-11 00:30:00 Trying now. I just installed over the top of my existing FFox and it works.

FasterFox extension doesn't work. But as this is a beta program, I can live with that.

469887 2006-07-11 00:34:00 I got rid of FasterFox. I didn't notice any difference using it, and some of the things it uses to speed browsing up is blocked by some websites. I noticed I couldn't log into my bank account, and a few other things with FasterFox turned on. mejobloggs (264)
469888 2006-07-11 00:53:00 I don't have this = "every browser tab now carries its own "Close" symbol". It appears and disappears. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
469889 2006-07-11 01:46:00 I like the close button in the corner...

Also, it looks like it has its own spell checker...

I haven't d/loaded it yet, but it's likely to have 'aspell'... great for forum posts and those who speak in TXT messages :D

469892 2006-07-11 02:42:00 Go here and you can d/l the Portable version and try it out before you use it without deleting your present version of Firefox. Find out which extensions still work etc.
