705092 2008-09-14 05:52:00 The laptop I am trying to get going has suddenly thrown up another strange fault.
Up to now it has been very good accepting my few programs and running them with no problems (particularly MSWorks and Total Commander)
Suddenly for no reason I can think of it has started to show 3 when I type the letter l
In addition k is replaced by 2 - and umpteen other letters have also got new personalities.
I have tried all the usual simple remedies - turning off and back on again etc., going over all the things I have done.
It hasn't been on the internet so no sudden virus.
This is the first time I have ever met this problem on any computer so am completely lost.
But I have just discovered that if I use my wifes settings (which are actually non existent at the moment) then Total Commander comes up and the keyboard works Ok . There is also a small lit up lock on the top LH side of the keyboard which is not lit now I am using my wifes settings.
I suppose I could delete my settings then change my wifes name to Tom for the moment. But don't know how to do that. Gawd I'm stupid!!!!

705093 2008-09-14 11:05:00 Possibly something to do with your keyboard map and/or regional settings being set wrongly (when you were asked that question when installing Xp), go to Control Panel and look for Regional & Language Options, and (assuming you're in NZ) set Regional Options to English (New Zealand), Location to New Zealand then left-click Languages tab and click the Details button, the window that opens should show as default input language English (NZ), and installed services should show as English (New Zealand) and keyboard as US, if it doesnt, click on Add and change it to that, then click OK and in the previous window select and remove the wrong one, click Apply and OK in that window then the previous one; you should be right now :clap :banana
By the way, did you get any cds with your laptop (that could be driver discs, even if you cant read/tell what they are?!?)?

This is strange.
As far as I know I did all the right things when I installed XP including making sure it was NZ English (normally for some obscure reason I use American English)
But I decided to follow your reasoning and made a strange discovery. I had American keyboard DVORAK also showing.
I deleted that. I have heard of it but forgotten what it is.
But even so I had already cured the problem by deleting TOM off the Log On screen then reinstalling myself. It wasn't too much bother but I am still trying to work out how the fault suddenly happened. That little green light that looks like a lock has not reappeared, and everything seems to be working except where I need my drivers.
Unfortunately no CDs came with the computer.

Sounds like you turned numlock on. Probably via a function key combination.

Nope not that one.

The capslock light is the next light along and is also of course a lock. It works correctly - the little light in question has "1" showing but I still do not know its function except that it had me worried. Perhaps that's its purpose in life.
It hasn't lit up since I cured the problem.

705097 2008-09-14 22:16:00 Was saying it would have been numlock not capslock. The numbers you mentioned generally line up with those letters when numlock is turned on for a laptop.

Have a look at this picture (www.notebookreview.com) is there little numbers on the keys similar to those?

Oh Dear dead right.
Now I feel a right muggins.
I was way off with my previous actions.
Excuses?
Well I am on my 6th laptop and I do not think I have ever used the keypad on any of them. My regular laptop (HP) is set up so that it is pretty difficult to use anyway - obviously so that people like me do not make daft mistakes.
This Sony Vaio is the opposite - requiring just one key (plainly identified) to use the thing.
Even when I consider my desktop I don't recall ever using the "number keypad". In fact probably the only time I have used one was when helping a local business with data entry and there the use of the pad really paid off.
Odly enough when I looked at the Sony where I was using it (in the garage) the tiny yellow numbers are virtually invisible - but here in my study right by a window they shine like Blackpool Illuminations.
Anyway thanks for putting me right.
