| 705031 | 2008-09-13 22:12:00 | Hello members I have a common box with an existing Winfast motherboard that needs to be replaced with a new one as I want to setup WHS. Existing is a 350w PSU, a GeForce FX series graphics card. Also I need to get a new CD/DVD reader/writer. The MB should have onboard Lan.The MB should be compatible with the existing graphics card. Would someone of you be able to suggest a good MB with CPU and a quiet fan. Thanks:) NT |

As mentioned in an earlier thread - my one is simply a P4 3.0 with the standard fan it came with with 1Gb of RAM, the DVD writer that I have in mine has only ever been used once, and that was to install the OS.The front fan is a 12CM Coolmaster (www.coolermaster.com) - No rear fan as the Case I use (www.promax.co.nz) has plenty of vents - Note: didn't buy it from the place linked, just they have a good pic of it. The board is nothing flash Gigabyte-945GCM-S2L (www.gigabyte.com.tw) - and I have never had any problems with data transfer, No Lag when playing Music / videos over the LAN etc. That board has 4 SATA headers for HD's and 1 IDE for a optical drive. |

I will have a look at your links in a minute. My box has two slots for HDD's and I might get 2/ 750GB HDD. Can I actually spread the files across two Hdd's? So I guess I need to attach a screen for the initial setup, is that right? Preferably I would order everything from the same place, have you got a hint? Thanks and have a good weekend!:D |

| 705034 | 2008-09-14 01:58:00 | Nope - CPU is the older Intel Pentium4 3.0Ghz CPU #630 - Pre 2 Core DUO's / Duel Core's (still socket 775) Can I actually spread the files across two Hdd's? ( in non technical terms) -When you have more than 1 HD on WHS it actually joins them together to create 1 large Drive - I used to have 4 drives attached but after having a play I moved some of the files to another Server - and removed the drives to that - currently I have two 320Gb Drives, but As shown here (www.imagef1.net.nz) it actually shows as 1 drive - as well as the amount of data stored where. So I guess I need to attach a screen for the initial setup, is that right? Correct - when doing the first setup you attach a keyboard/mouse/Monitor and need a working internet connection - once its all installed it first boots up to the server 2003 ( mine did anyway), then loads WHS - you dont need to log into it unless you want, as every thing can be done over the LAN Via the Connector software Example of WHS Settings (www.imagef1.net.nz) - thats Via the connector software thats on every PC - the Remote access, folder sharing permissions every thing. Part of the software gives you a domain name for remote access - FREE. In fact while I'm writing this I'm remotely connected to a Business I have the WHS in doing their Off Site remote backups :) . For security reasons I have blanked out the data names Example (www.imagef1.net.nz) Preferably I would order everything from the same place, have you got a hint? Hmmmm ;) - lets say PM me - I do run a business - but forum rules say no self advertising, & there are several other people in the forums that run a business as well. |

Just to elaborate here, WHS does have fault tolerance but only if you stipulate which folders to setup with fault tolerance. WHS will then duplicate the folder to both hard drives so if 1 fails the data is on the other disk. |

| 705037 | 2008-09-14 22:51:00 | SolMiester So it is something similar(a very distant cousin) of raid? So it can be setup which folders duplicate and which ones not? That should be good. Anything else I should be aware of(because of the MBP)? |

| 705038 | 2008-09-15 00:40:00 | Yep - you can tell the system what to duplicate and what not to duplicate. | wainuitech (129) | ||

| 705040 | 2008-09-15 04:46:00 | Hello Back again Could I use Airport Extreme Base Station as a connection between the router and the WHS so I can place the WHS(machine) in another room? |
