704962 2008-09-13 07:09:00 Well gota friends laptop here, no idea what they did, but when you login in both safe mode and normal it comes up wtih the message

Message:
the system process
'C:\System32\services.exe'
somthing

nt authority system somthing

i tried to google around but could only find old things, i can get it to a stage where it is semi usable, but if i try to scan it with any removal tools the system locks up and shuts down

im all for formatting, but i cannot as the documents on the machine are all needed for work and all that

i looked around for a bootable virus scanner but can't find anything that wont cost me an arm and a leg

whats my next option?

any help appreciated

btw windows home edition sp2

it wont even recognize my usb drive or anything so i can't get a hijackthis log off of the machine

yeah and when i try to run something it takes 5-10 minutes to show up, i removed a bunch of things i considered suspect in hijackthis, made the machine semi stable, but still :/ sad face

desktop and screensaver have also been hijacked lol

704965 2008-09-13 07:17:00 Connect it as a slave internally, see if a working system picks it up

Then scan it with Avast / Trojan remover / Malwarebytes

704971 2008-09-13 08:31:00 Looks like Mcafee AV can cause this error

If you boot into safe mode, what happens after this message comes up?

Does it go into windows? Or does it reboot?
