2008-09-12 09:25:00 | All of a sudden XP computer can't read blank DVDs. It can read already burnt DVDs but not blank DVDs. I have tried EVERYTHING but nothing has worked. All I have is DVDs at home and I need to burn the vista recovery CD iso to the DVD to fix my other laptop. Is it possible to extract the vista recovery CD files to a flash drive then make the flash drive bootable?

Which will let you burn to cd and dvd from my computer. Is this installed? Or what program are you using ? If youre using XP's built in burning I dont think it burns ISO's to cd or DVD. You need something like Nero, Poweriso, and maybe cdburnerxp It may work if you boot from a USB flash drive, thats if the system supports booting from one. And if the flash drive can be made bootable. Not all are |

2008-09-12 09:36:00 | Thanks speedy for the quick reply-not sure if I have the patch or not but the problem is that not only can I not read/write to the blank DVD, it doesn't show in my computer-just says DVD/CD-RW Drive. How do I make the flash drive bootable?

2008-09-12 09:44:00 | How BIG is the flash drive?? Bigger than 4GB? Because depending on how big the ISO is, and how big the DVD is after you burn the ISO to it, you normally have to format a flash drive in FAT/FAT32. NOT NTFS. Since I dont think USB flash drives will boot if formatted in NTFS And what program are you using to try to burn the ISO to DVD?? Because you just cant copy it across to a dvd (through my computer). The contents of the ISO need to be extracted to DVD. To make it bootable All I did to make the flash drive bootable here is format it in FAT and download a bootfile from Bootdisk (www.bootdisk.com) Extract the files from it and copy them to the flash drive. Then it was bootable

2008-09-12 09:52:00 | it doesn't show in my computer-just says DVD/CD-RW Drive. This is normal, (mine says cd drive, when I put a blank in) until you burn to it. It'll change the name to the name in the ISO (or change to the name you give it in whatever program youre using), once its finished burning.

2008-09-12 09:54:00 | Its the vista recovery CD-only 124mb, so my 1gb flash drive can easily contain it. I'm trying to burn it using Burnatonce, but the problem is the computer doesn't even see the black DVD. I have extracted the files to the USB. But what bootfile do I download? Can you give a me a direct link please? Thanks for your time so far :)

2008-09-12 10:00:00 | Have you got any blank cd's. A blank DVD is a bit of an overkill for a 124mb file It'll probably work if you put a blank cd in. Does burnatonce see / list the burner ? If it does, dont worry if my computer / the PC doesnt see it. If the program sees the burner, it should burn to it Get the 98 boot files Umm has the flash drive been formatted?? Get one of the 98 bootfiles here (bootdisk.com) I cant remember which one I downloaded, it was a while ago now

2008-09-12 10:05:00 | What do I do with the bootfiles? Wakey wakey read the bottom of post #4 Thats probably why it isnt working then. It knows its a DVD and probably wants a blank cd. Or bring the ISO, and the laptop to Mt Eden tomorrow, I'll burn it to cd for you
