472653 2006-07-22 00:17:00 Gizmo Project now offers free calls to landlines and mobiles, provided that the person is a Gizmo project member (you can get around this by creating a second account for yourself and entering the number of the person you want to call as your own number for each call). maccrazy (6741)
472654 2006-07-22 00:48:00 VOIPStunt give "free" computer to landline in most countries, but you need to have a "credit" of 10 Euros in your account, which must be topped up quartely or lost, so it's best described "free" with an underlying fixed cost.

It works OK though.

472655 2006-07-22 03:39:00 Hmmm.

To clarify:

I don't care about ringing overseas.
I don't care about ringing other "members".
I prefer to have an actual phone rather than directly using the PC.
Security matters.

472656 2006-07-22 03:57:00 I thought VOIP was free. I downloaded the software and the first thing I saw was a message telling me I had no credit. All I wamted to do was to try it out (by talking to a few friends).
No Credit so no use.
Now uninstalled. :groan: :groan:

I think in NZ that home VOIP is still too immature. I would wait until LLU has been finalized then we may see some services. I currently use Sype for calling my daughter overseas but having to have it connected to a PC to use it is a real pain..

472658 2006-07-22 04:59:00 I've been using Woosh's VOIP offering for almost a year now. When they first started there were a few problems but now I wouldn't go back to a phone line sooooooooo I rippped it out, that was satisfying, no more Telecom and I have a !mbps+ connection with a 10 GB cap, free local calling and 10c per min to most countries, however mobile termination rates push that price to 39c.
The point about LLU. Woosh would probably not have come about if we had had LLU earlier, a fact that David Webb acknowledged in his decision not to force Telecom unto unbundling.

472659 2006-07-22 05:14:00 The problem with Woosh is you have to have the suckful broadband plan as well. pctek (84)
