472359 2006-07-20 08:48:00 Is it any good? They were raving about it on the radio today.
Almost every time I've switched over to it, it's all been in Maori and I can't understand a word. :groan: One would have thought that a state funded tv station would be in English?

Kinda answered your own question there didn't ya?
I don't like it, it's all in Maori and I can't understand it either. It took over our TV2 for a few days randomly, but then disappeared. I would rate it as worse than TV2. And that's saying something!!

472361 2006-07-20 09:15:00 Well duh, of course its in Maori (it is Maori TV after all).
Jeeeeez

Anyway, it isn't ALL in Maori, there are some great documentarys indigenous races of the world, and there is even the odd Learn to speak Maori programme.
If interested, you can look at the website (http://www.maoritelevision.com/) which has all sorts of info about the programmes etc. Click the Whats On link and it will give you a review of whats on and whether its in Maori or not.

472362 2006-07-20 09:22:00 A lot of the movies I see look to me to be far more interesting then the fluff played on the other channels, Though much of the local content looks to be piffle designed purely as something to waste money on and fill a few pockets, It was no surprise to see which people suddenly went into the bizzo of producing television shows when they realised all they had to do was put their hand out and they were showered in money..... Funny . Many Maori I know of (or at least people I know who claim to be Maori) wouldn't speak enough Maori to be able to understand a word either .

Anyway - just thought I'd ask . It's been a while since I switched over and hearing what some people were saying about it made me think that perhaps I've been missing out on some great quality informative and educational entertainment .

It amazes me how all these handouts go unchallenged, there are none so blind as those that will not see.
Or at least words to that effect.

Yep, I've watched a few, some good stuff.
And not all the programmes are are in Maori. But then being a Maori channel they kind of have to have content in Maori don't they? Would you expect Russian TV to be exclusively in English?

472368 2006-07-20 13:25:00 Funny. Many Maori I know of (or at least people I know who claim to be Maori) wouldn't speak enough Maori to be able to understand a word either. :confused:History will show you that this was due in large to the NZ Government banning Te Reo Maori and enforcing the use of English being spoken in public for many years. As a result the Maori language almost died. Some families still spoke it, just in their own homes; hence it never died completely.

Maori can be learnt by those who want to learn (I am full-blooded pakeha yet can get by in a reasonably basic conversation in Te Reo Maori)
