704714 2008-09-14 07:44:00 Its didn't work- the after restarting it didn't run check disk.
I will get a Vista CD tommorow.
Will it help?
Blam (54)
704715 2008-09-14 08:25:00 Dunno - the recovery section of Vista is the same as the vista recovery CD iso you downloaded - so it prob wont make much difference.

As mentioned a couple of times - the only Way I have found to fix it was either slave to another PC or complete reinstall.

Unless the DVD you get allows it to do a repair install.

704717 2008-09-14 08:39:00 With nothing to do, I decided to do a scan with the Avast! BART CD and picked up a Win32:VB-EHG[trj] called C:\pagefile.sys.
Is this really a virus?
I will remove it when the scan has finished

704718 2008-09-14 09:11:00 C:\pagefile.sys is a legit hidden system file - its your paging file.

It may be a bug masquerading as the paging file, but be careful if you delete it - might make matters worse if its the legit file..

704719 2008-09-14 09:12:00 so..should I remove it?
Avast thinks its a virus

704720 2008-09-14 09:28:00 You can try, but if it doesnt boot after.

Altho you maybe able to recreate it (hopefully), if it works

704721 2008-09-14 09:28:00 I wouldn't remove it.

Have a look at This forum (forumserver.twoplustwo.com) - look at #3 - seems a few people are getting that report from Avast - I dont actually Use avast so I cant say I 've ever come across it - I use Nod32. Also in that link theres another link in #3 Googled around a bit, leads to the Avast Web Forum.

704722 2008-09-14 09:41:00 Depending on whether Avast is up to date, it may also be a false positive.

Some sites do say however, that it is safe to delete it and it'll be recreated

704723 2008-09-14 09:47:00 Whats the chance it'll be recreated?
Can I recover it with a Vista DVD?
