704704 2008-09-13 08:10:00 Whats the specs of this laptop youre trying to fix?

What update was installed before it stuffed up?

Did someone turn this laptop off while it was installing an update?

Specs: Vista Business 32bit 2.0ghz C2D, 2gb RAM, 100gb HDD
Toshiba Portege M500e (www.saintkentigern.com)

The update was SP1, I think it got to about stage 3 or something..then it restarted then the BSOD cam up

Nope, no one turned off the laptop while it was installing the update

Are you trying to run chkdsk from the Recovery DVD or from safemode/command prompt ?

I am running chkdsk from the Vista Recovery CD, Safe mode doesn't work, freezes at the crcdisk.sys.

Does it help if I have the Avast! Bart CD or UBCD?
I have access to both as I am a PAL(peer assisted learning) tutor at school-basically a student technician

704705 2008-09-13 08:46:00 Currently running the Avast BART Disk checker tool Blam (54)
704706 2008-09-13 10:17:00 Found 4kb in bad sectors-but the BSOD still appears on boot.
Anything else I can do?
How can I use teh UBCD4Win to fix this?

704707 2008-09-14 02:07:00 If I follow the instructions here (www.vistax64.com) will my laptop get kicked off the school network/domain?

Is WT of Speedy here?

704708 2008-09-14 02:28:00 The problem with Vista ( and its a real pain in the BUTT! ) is, as pointed out in the first line of the procedure
You must have Retail Full or Upgrade Vista installation DVD to do this. Some people have had problems with a Full version letting them do a upgrade install though. The repair install you can do in XP is one of the features thats causing a problem in Vista.

Personally I have never tried a repair install of Vista - mainly because I only use OEM Software, the OEM has the upgrade option grayed out :(

None of my customers have ever had Retail Versions its ether been preinstalled (name Brand PC's with no DVD's) or OEM.

This is only going from past experience with XP - it has wiped out the settings sometimes - what Vista would do - I HONESTLY have no idea.

Additional: Just got a Copy of a Vista Business on a Dell (OEM) - found an Upgrade Vista DVD - loaded it the upgrade option is grayed out - would only let me do a fresh install.

704710 2008-09-14 02:43:00 All I can think of is removing the HD and slaving it to another Vista PC and running chkdsk through that.

BUT I know you said you dont have access to another PC :crying

704711 2008-09-14 03:15:00 If I do somehow get my hands on a vista business CD, are all my problems solved?
BTW right now I'm on UBCD4Win

704712 2008-09-14 05:48:00 OK Try this - boot from UBCD4Win , Click Start - Go upto Command prompt, you should then have a box that has the following X:\I386\System32> type on chkdsk /f C: (Press Enter) Hopefully chkdsk will run and fix the problem -

If it doesn't, then redo the above, BUT this time first open My Computer from the Desktop, double click C: drive to open it - rerun the commands - this time you should get a message saying "chksdk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first ---etc press Y

you will then get a message saying it has been dismounted, and do you want to run chkdsk on next restart press Y

Type in exit ( Press enter) click start/restart

If your in luck Vista's own chkdsk will run (as long as its not damaged) - hopefully fixing it good enough to at least load - if not then it may be remove the drive as previously suggested or take it to someone who can scan it - or A possible reinstall.

Note: Screen shot of above commands (www.imagef1.net.nz) - just tried it on a Vista PC here and its scanning the drive with Vistas own repair startup function.

If I do somehow get my hands on a vista business CD Doesn't matter what version of Vista it is, all versions of Vista are on the one DVD - its the product key that determines what version gets installed.

704713 2008-09-14 06:04:00 Add to above --- IF it manages to boot, even in safe mode, then click the start orb/ in th search type in CMD, in the result, RIGHT click it and select run as administrator, when open type in chkdsk /f <enter> go through the reboot sequence again and this time it will run the real chkdsk. wainuitech (129)
