Yea, the SONY in-ear (etymotic?) earphones seem to get good reviews - MDREX71SL, MDREX81SL .

I have owned the EX71s and whilst their performance is acceptable for the price, the build quality is shocking . Mine developed a dry joint at the earbud cable entry, and there are also many reports of the cable insulation shearing .

I think I would probably prefer these over more bulky alternatives for the reasons Greg mentioned, although the Sennheiser PX100/200 seem reasonably compact (fold-up) and if they're THAT much better than I might be keen .
Is there a large difference between the closed and open style headphones?

Open headphones provide more accurate audio reproduction, with the difference in bass response being particularly noticeable . Closed headphones, on the other hand, offer the benefit of reducing ambient noise . If you're planning to use your headphones in a moderately noisy environment then you should opt for closed headphones, but otherwise open headphones are the better option . If you're in an extremely noisy environment, it is in your best interests to avoid using headphones at all .

Also, there must be a point where the quality of the earphone/headphone cannot perform beyond the quality of the mp3 encoding . . . if you understand what I mean . . .
Any more comments/recommendations would be appreciated .

Fair comment . I encode my music in 192kbps MP3 and AAC, and I would expect that anything better than the PX100/200 would reveal the limitations of the audio source .

472782 2006-07-24 01:15:00 I encode using AAC and have Shure e3c's, they sound awesome and reduce outside noise to a whisper. I don't usually notice a sound quality issue with the ipod unless I plug the earphones into my laptop (Audigy2 ZS notebook) Then I notice the quality issue.

But hey it's a portable player and you'll never get audiophile sound quality.

472783 2006-07-24 01:23:00 I got the Sony ear plug jobbies a few years ago, they are fantastic, block outside noise and keep your noise to your ears. Very good sound though expensive. They must have better ones by now! SolMiester (139)
472784 2006-07-24 09:45:00 Thanks again for your comments...alasta, cheers for that, I hadn't heard of too many build quality issues with the SONY in-ears but it's good to know. Looks like the Sennheiser's are the best bet at this stage. The most noisy environment I would be in, is on a bus so maybe closed headphones would suit better. I see the closed ones are approx $20 more expensive than the open ones and was wondering whether (in a quiet environment) they would reproduce better sound or whether it isn't noticeable.
I had a look at the Shure earphones but they seem a little too expensive and I would imagine they would reveal the limitations of the audio source as mentioned.
Any more comments/recommendations appreciated, thanks :)

No, you'll find that open headphones will generally produce better sound quality than closed headphones at the same or a similar price . If you buy a pair of closed headphones, then you pay a bit more and sacrifice some audio quality in return for the additional sonic isolation that they provide .

Shure earphones seem to be quite highly regarded, but it's worth noting that they do go quite deep into your ear canal . Some people aren't bothered by this, but I personally feel more comfortable with cans .

The choice between buds and cans is a very personal thing, so go for whatever suits you best .

472786 2007-07-10 09:47:00 Does anyone know where we can go and tryout different headphones. gum digger (6100)
472787 2007-07-10 10:22:00 You could try the Sony Store in New Market, or possibly any good sound equipment store. Also for the record .AAC is actually MP4 as MP3 is the older lesser quality but very generic codec. The other codec that would be worth while trying would be Apple Lossless. winmacguy (3367)
472788 2007-07-10 11:17:00 FLAC is also pretty good ;) Erayd (23)
472789 2007-07-11 07:09:00 This all sound great as it is my birthday later this month. I am hoping for an listening device which cuts out outside sound from Mrs Misty or No 1 daughter.
Be great when I go to the gym (should have gone tonight :( )
