472369 2006-07-20 20:28:00 It does have some good docos on it, i haven't watched it much, but as a bonus i haven't seen any survivor / big brother/ wife swap drivel on it Morgenmuffel (187)
472370 2006-07-20 20:40:00 I've seen some programs, Prime and Maori make TV in NZ bearable, with some great alternative stuff. Maori have had some amazing documentaries and movies on it, that you just don't see anywhere else. netchicken (4843)
472371 2006-07-20 21:26:00 Yep, I've watched a few, some good stuff.
And not all the programmes are are in Maori. But then being a Maori channel they kind of have to have content in Maori don't they? Would you expect Russian TV to be exclusively in English?
If the English paid fo it,why not?

472373 2006-07-21 01:49:00 You didn't say anything anti-Maori , did you?
:horrified
For what it's worth, I hate Maori TV not for reasons of race, but for tax reasons.

Thousands get bumped off hospital waiting lists, teachers getting paid crap, police work pays so poorly some take up ...er.. "other occupations" but there's mega-millions for a TV station?

I don't care if it's Maori TV, Chinese TV or Martian TV.

Priorities, priorities. But who cares what we think? We're only taxpayers & voters.

I also note the state hands out a shyte load of money for Shortland St, NZ music (of which the vast majority is crap) etc etc

472375 2006-07-21 02:46:00 Just some figures:

In the 2005/2006 financial year, funding of $105 million has been allocated to these outcomes. Our funding is roughly divided as follows:

Programmes for television $68.6 million
Public radio services $30.4 million
NZ music promotion $4.9 million
Transmission $0.09 million
Archiving $1.1 million

In the May 2005 Budget the Government announced additional funding to enable NZ On Air to maintain the television budget at a level that allows strategies developed over the past few years to be sustained. Funding for Radio New Zealand, through NZ On Air, was also increased to enable the broadcaster to maintain its current standards and enhance its programming, and also roll out National Radio on the FM broadcast band. Quoted from here (www.nzonair.govt.nz)

NZ On Air allocates around $3.7 million to $5 million per annum for a range of Māori kaupapa projects.Quoted from here (www.nzonair.govt.nz)

472376 2006-07-21 03:10:00 I seldom check it out but big ups to Maori TV for having the Tall Blacks game. Looked last night and it certainly has a real NZ flavour to it.

While there has been an appalling waste of money over this channel, the idea of protecting Maori language and culture is sound.

How do you figure that? TVNZ is a SOE...a profitable one.

Maori TV on the other hand is one way traffic.

However I guess it wasn't started as a money machine for the governement it was started to help protect and foster Maori culture.

I won't get into a debate on that. :waughh:

Glad to hear it is sound, pity about who pays for it.
