704827 2008-09-12 23:18:00 Hi all,
Am planning to build this CD player project from Jaycar:

www1.jaycar.com.au

It only works with ATAPI drives through the IDE cable. How common are these drives? I found heaps of old drives on trademe but not sure if they are right or not.

Any help much appreciated!

They are the commonest type, tho there is Sata optical drives becoming available, and there may be SCSI drives also (tho I've never seen one ;))

704830 2008-09-12 23:44:00 But why do you want to go to the trouble of building this when you could buy a DVD player which would also play your audio cds, for a similar price?
Just for the buzz of making it? :clap :clap

704831 2008-09-13 00:15:00 I have to admit to spending more than a few hours of late planning/dreaming of building a DIY home audio system based around the initial construction of some "Natalie P" tower loudspeakers described in this thread:

Now I am just hoping the exchange rate will go the right way to make it cheaper to order the parts from America (Parts Express), before purchasing to begin.

Since Jaycar sells a few amp kits, as well as this CD adaptor, I will be able to eventually make a full DIY/kitset system - mainly just for the fun of DIY and as I am a joiner with an interest in electronics and hifi, the two (or three) go together here quite nicely :)
