| 705596 | 2008-09-16 04:41:00 | HP Desktop. I have bought 2 x 1GB Ram to add to the existing 2 x 256. The supplier (Crucial) advises to turn of the computer but leave it plugged in to keep the case grounded. Utube videos I've watched say to unplug everything. Does it matter which way? My computer specs say that it has 2 banks of 2 with 256 in mem banks 1 and three. Do I leave those where they are and add the new ram to the empty slots. Thanks (this post might appear twice, I seem to be getting auto logged out or something). |

I gently cleaned most of them off with cotton buds and the dustbuster. Is there a special tool to clean between the grill slots under the fan or should I just leave it as is? |

Re dust, as long as you've got 99% of it, wouldn't worry (to clean it fully, you'd need to remove the fan (but not the heatsink!)), can be a mission. Alternatively you can buy cans of compressed air (expensive tho), or take the case to your local garage and get them to blow it out (gently!) with a duster gun (poke a finger in the fan/s so they dont spin up and stuff the bearings). |

| 705605 | 2008-09-18 04:59:00 | Bellbird, at least you weren't as stupid as me when I installed some ram a few weeks ago. For a start, I couldn't figure out how to get the side cover off my computer... I installed it fine, but when I started having problems with the computer and someone suggested it may be the ram (I don't think it is now), I removed it, then when I replaced it, I obviously didn't check it was clipped in place properly. I checked the memory on my computer and it said 512MB and everything was slow or crashed repeatedly. I had been told to swap the position of the old ram with the new ram and put the old ram in the next slot, so I started to think maybe I needed to check it was in properly! It wasn't, so I clipped it in properly, put it all back together again and turned it on, only to find I only had 2.5GB of ram. I was sure I'd had 3GB before, so I figured one of the 512MB ones wasn't in place properly either. I was right! Talk about 'where's Wally'! I was told to turn everything off at the wall but leave it plugged in and despite my misgivings, I am still alive! |
