705490 2008-09-16 03:10:00 Hi guys

I brought a computer with the Windows xp professional and with a CD key from a friend recently, but I want to reformat the whole machine, but he doesn't have the disc anymore because it is damaged .

I am just wondering, what are the chances of me if I borrow another Pro version from my friend and install it with my current serial number??? will it work?

or I currently have a OEM version home version . . is that serial number going to allow me to install on the home version and activate it as well?

I think i have see this similar question on the forum before?

Anyway, your help will be gladly appreciated

The Pro key wont work with Home tho

705495 2008-09-20 20:17:00 Hi guys...

I managed to seach in this forum about the Windows XP setup disc.. if it is home, then we must use the home version, if it is professional, then we must use the professional version... (i sort of knew it!)

However, can anybody please help, anybody out there who has the Windows XP professional setup disc (no need to have the product serial number as I have it from my orginal machine), if you can help, please pm me and I will contact you when I finishes work later this afternoon?

You guys wonderful help will be greatly appreciated

705496 2008-09-20 20:42:00 I have an XP Pro disc, slipstreamed with SP3 so it's on a CD-R, but it is genuine. You may need to use the supplied key - it's a special disc which can be legally used several times. pcuser42 (130)

Can you explain how that works?

a "special disc" that may need to "use the supplied key" sounds a bit suspect to me.

Is it a corporate edition or something?

I dont see how it can be "legally used several times"

705498 2008-09-21 06:06:00 Easy way to find out if the key will work is to insert it into any machine, start Setup (new install only) and enter the product key, see if it's accepted then quit Setup.

If it works then what are you waiting for :D
