705479 2008-09-16 02:30:00 Saw my daughter's lappie for the first time yesterday (never knew she had one). Dell something or other (yeah I know!!), 1 G RAM, Vista Home Basic. Told her she needed another Gig at least. Had my first flutter with Vista. As you can imagine, quite slow with 1 G. Had McAfee on it, but it was not current. Uninstalled McAfee and installed Avast and all the nice anti spyware proggies. After doing scans with MalwareBytes, found over 2400 serious bad bastards. Deleted them all. In the process lost the Vista thingie she had on the Desktop, on the right hand side of the Desktop - a facility that shows your photoclips, video clips and whatever (and I think it constantly rotate between the photo clips). Checked everywhere how to get it back but I don't even know what it is called.

Any suggestions for this poor stoopid one?

Can't remember what it is called either - took it off mine. And I have 2GB RAM. The above was posted by someone and I followed all the instructions and my lappy really screams along now.

Just a thought

705482 2008-09-16 03:27:00 It's called the sidebar.

Get it back by going to Control Panel > Windows Sidebar and ticking the Start with Windows check box.

705483 2008-09-16 03:28:00 Sidebar is what you are after.

EDIT: jwil1 beat me to it..

705484 2008-09-16 03:33:00 That's the sidebar. To re-enable it, right-click that weird icon in the system tray (this www.imagef1.net.nz) and click open (or just left-click it). If it's not there... I have no idea. Check msconfig. You might have to add the gadgets to it, so right click the sidebar, and go "add gadgets".

Damn, should refresh.

705486 2008-09-16 09:02:00 A neighbour has an Acer laptop (I know - -) and it is fully equipped with not only factory installed Vista Home Basic, it has (according to the read-outs) 512 MB of RAM. No racehorse, but it does run.

I suspect that Vista can't even read RAM right.

705487 2008-09-16 22:15:00 My laptop uses that just sitting there. How much of that RAM is dedicated to video? My laptop had 512Mb as the default! Even though I have 2Gb, I wound it back to 128, runs sweet as now. ubergeek85 (131)

Have you thought of ringing Bill and telling him where he is going wrong?
