474494 2006-07-29 03:25:00 This NZ study (www.otago.ac.nz) connecting TV viewing and childhood obesity is much discussed in Australia at the moment, with the view of banning advertising that targets children (~under 16 I assume).

From the linked article:
...the study indicates that TV viewing has a greater impact on body mass index (BMI) than that usually found for either diet or inactivity.

I find this surprising - TV is worse than laziness and eating rubbish!

474495 2006-07-29 03:30:00 If you eat a television set, you'll gain weight too. :D

(I suspect we have problems with correlations here. Someone who watches a lot of television is likely to not take much exercise. They might consume a lot of junk food while watching, too. Some one who doesn't spend a lot of couch time might consider a lot of activity to be not "exercise"; just normal behaviour.)

I don't find it surprising at all. Not Grahams sensible interpretation, but moronic studies like this one.
Breathing could be said to make you fat. After all no fat people haven't breathed either.

474497 2006-07-29 05:40:00 And for the flip side... the larger one is the more energy one expends moving. So it stands to reason that when the fat little kiddies get up off the sofa to change the channel they will expend exponentially more energy than a skinny kid... oh wait, I forgot about the remote :( Shortcircuit (1666)
474498 2006-07-29 13:01:00 Never knew Rolling exterted more energy than walking. lol.

As the wise bumpersticker once said.

Eat Well,
Stay Thin,

Die anyway.

Maybe the goverment should clone the lady from "The Fat Chance" And send one to every fat household in NZ.

lol gtg, It's SNACK TIME!

(Chrunch, Chrunch, Belch)

P.S:

Seriously, I fail to understand WHY people allow themselves to get so bad. I blame McDonalds and those other megacorporations who really dont care at the end of the day. It's discusting and they should be made more responsible, maybe a warning saying: WARNING! This SuperMcGreaseBurger is 90% Fat, 1% healthy stuff and 9% Unhealthy stuff. Consumption may lead to Fatness and Diabetes...

EDIT:

How many studies have gone into finding out if playing violent video games raises aggression in the player? Not that Aggression EVER translates into violence.

I disagree: everyone knows mcdonalds, bk, kfc etc are all unhealthy, blaming these companies for our own gluttony is just shifting the blame so we dont have to show any self control/responsibility.

We buy their food.

We are responsible.

it's not like they're forcing it down our throats

perhaps we should blame our employers for giving us a means to purchase said junkfood? it would be just as effective.

its not like i blame motorbike manufacturers every time i hurt myself because they didnt make their product foolproof at the cost of fun (or in the fast food case, taste). when i ride my bike, i expect to get hurt/crippled/killed. when i eat mcd's, i expect to get the ****s the next day (offsetting the weight gain somewhat). when i eat kfc, well, i learnt why not do that a loooong time ago lol - SECRET: chickens didnt evolve, they were genetically engineered by bacteria as a form of transport

Sure, if you contract an illness such as salmonella/diahrrea(sp?)/ebola/plague as a result of consuming their food, their fault. illness from overconsumption, our fault: when i threw up the other night i didnt blame flame/heiniken/whatever (i dont really remember :o ) for making such a tasty alchoholic beverage, or the mates who shouted the drinks

and same for tv, buy a bike/ball/cricket set/sneakers and get out there. i do think sitting on your ass watching nothing but tv can aid obesity, just like sitting here in front of my pc.

for the record i generally find the results from most studies like that to be very subjective and open for interpretation

PS: has anyone noticed that "i'm lovin' it" is a contraction of "i am loving it" which in turn is an anagram of "ailing vomit"

Heaps and heaps of studies - all over the world.
Naturally, they give differing results.

So - depending on what you want the answer to be - just pick one that fits your own opinions.

474502 2006-07-29 22:22:00 When I was a youngster I used to watch westerns at the movie house. It was about a four mile walk to get there.

So I got my exercise and I never felt I had to shoot Red Indians on sight as a result of watching the film. I still can't fly like Superman and I can't yet make myself invisible as in Predator.

We all have to make our own choices and stand or fall by them.

About time everyone took responsibilty for their own actions and not blame others.
