474300 2006-07-28 07:18:00 I've noticed it more and more lately and today I went to have a look at PCWorld (the overseas one, not the home of our benefactors) and they have 're-designed' their web site.

In Firefox it just looks a mess, all text out of place, ie half way between buttons so you don't know which one to click, text extending over the other columns etc.

Nothing I do like changing text size in F/fox will fix it, only option is to view in IE tab, which squashes everything up into the center third of the page and I get that annoying 'do you want to install flash player?' pop up.

So, is this a fault with Firefox being 'non-compliant', or is it just lazy web design? I would have expected better from PCWorld if it's just laziness.

Other NZ sites that do the same thing are Aunty herald and the horrid Ferrit.

474301 2006-07-28 07:51:00 Any particular page? US PCWorld and Herald look OK on this FF. PaulD (232)
474302 2006-07-28 07:55:00 Thats wierd...

So, is this a fault with Firefox being 'non-compliant',WHAT?? How dare you! :p FF is far more standards compliant than IE.

474303 2006-07-28 08:06:00 Yep, it's the US PCWorld. My Firefox is 'standard', ie I haven't tinkered with it...or Windows since the last install a couple of weeks ago. :(

mejoebloggs... I read a while back that compliance- wise Opera is top, IE 2nd, F/fox 3rd. They even had examples of how well each browser rendered pages.

At least F/fox does a good job on PF1 :)

474304 2006-07-28 08:11:00 Trying using CTRL-R to force a hard refresh of the pages which display incorrectly. Jen (38)
474305 2006-07-28 08:22:00 CNTRL-R didn't work Jen. I have also been into F/fox options and tried reducing font size without success (and unticked 'allow sites to use their own fonts')

Maybe a better question is- why do some sites with a lot of text display and format correctly, while others look like a jumble sale on DPB day?
Shortcircuit (1666)
474306 2006-07-28 08:29:00 That site displays fine for me in Firefox apart from the dreaded horizontal scroll bar they have happening - this is on a 1280x1024 monitor too

You done a complete clean out of your cache?

Its probably incompetent web design. This is because I have caused a similar result fiddling with my website - although as I use Mozilla it tends to throw it all out for IE users.
Then I have to grovel an ask Rob99 to fix it for me.
pctek (84)
474308 2006-07-28 09:09:00 The reason is because you have set Firefox to use a minimum Font size, forcing the text out and over the formatting of the page.

At least thats my bet, The page looks to me exactly as you described untill I changed my minimum font size to "none" , Now it looks as sexy as a couple of hot blondes waiting for me in a three person sleeping bag.

WOOHOOOO!!!! :D :D :D

474309 2006-07-28 09:48:00 Wooohooo . . . Metla's onto it (or something) .

Now the question is- why was minimum font size set to 20pt in f/fox?

I smell gremlins

Have to say everything looks crap at 10pt, but at least I know I can work the PCWorld page if I need/want to .

I think PCtek's suggestion of crap web design still has something to it .
