Two Christchurch men face theft charges after police targeted car radar detectors being sold on the Trade Me website.
"The value of radar detectors stolen is estimated to be in excess of $50,000," Mr Garrick said. "Considering they cost from $500 to $1200 retail, they were generally being on-sold for less than half price."

The detectors were believed to have been stolen in car break-ins.
Many of the items had not been reported stolen and police had been unable to return them to their owners.
"It would have been better if more people reported that they had items stolen and took note of serial numbers and brands"

Tell the police your radar detector's been stolen?

I feel a Tui ad coming on...

474225 2006-07-28 02:26:00 I thought it wasn't illegal to own a radar detector in NZ? Greg (193)
474226 2006-07-28 06:08:00 It's not, but frowned upon by some Police.

I tell them that it's a safety device... when it makes a noise it reminds you to look at the speedo and check that you're under the limit.

Similar to having the 'other half' in the passenger seat :D

So what? Its not ILLEGAL. So it makes no difference even if you say I use it for finding out where the speed traps are.

I've tried that one. The conversation tends to go; "So you admit that you sometimes speed? Do you own this car/... Are you sure it's not stolen/ Can I see your driver's license/ I'll just check your warrant and rego while we're here...."

In other words, if you drive a fast car with a radar detector it pays to make sure they can't give you a ticket for anything else- because like it or not it is the perception that it gives them that can make all the difference.

I have thought of taping a cardboard cut-out of a Holden onto the side to see if that makes a difference :D

474229 2006-07-28 12:23:00 HAve a Super Snooper raider detector sitting in the garage 1980s vintage. Saved me many a ticket. It would pick up radar before you could even see the police car who was more than likely sitting in the shade uinder some tree's.

474230 2006-07-28 12:43:00 If there is no complaint (e.g. no one reports an item(s) stolen), does it mean they have to give it/them back to the two they arrested? Or is there legislation whereby if some items are stolen, anything else suspect is confiscated?

Do the Police sell goods they believe to be stolen if they cannot locate the owners? I could do with a Radar detector... lol
Maybe they'll sell it on trade me... ;)

Nah, I'm sure a note would be made of my name etc...!

And you wouldn't believe the number of bikes being sold in those auctions. Lots of expensive ones too...
