473493 2006-07-25 20:45:00 Unless I have got it wrong there is legislation out that prohibits DIY'ers and owner/builders from building their own home after 2009. :illogical Can anyone explain the reason behind this and what the details are. i.e. Can the owner builder build his/her home providing the house is started prior to 2009?
And what about other related work such as wiring and plumbing the house - can the owner builder do this as well providing it is checked by a registered trademan?

cheers

473494 2006-07-26 02:53:00 It was a face saving solution to a situation where poorly designed houses were being thrown together by the professionals and subsequently leaking. Owner builders especially those doing extentions to older, more conservatively designed houses got dragged in even though they probably weren't responsible for many of the problem buildings. I believe there is scope for you to work under supervision. The Electrical Regs allow for the house owner to do some work provided it is inspected before connection but I don't think this applies to plumbing. PaulD (232)
473495 2006-07-26 04:03:00 Yes you're not allowed to do it yourself; you have to pay an expert to cock things up professionally. You might accidentally do things properly, because it's for yourself. Graham L (2)
473496 2006-07-26 09:29:00 This is the most gormless piece of legistlation for a long time. It is in response to the equally gormlessly named 'leaky building syndrome', which was simply the National govt at the time de-regulating the building industry in order to 'foster growth' or similar claptrap and unleashed a whole lot of cowboy builders and developers on the market. Their work was shoddy and now DIY's are being resticted to fix it up?

Stupid stupid stupid. I have done a lot of building and built my own house. In my experieince home builders are more cautious than professionals and tend to over build rather than cut corners because hey it's where you and your family are going to live.

I don't care about being boring by repeating myself because this legistalation is just stupid stupid stupid. :angry :angry :angry

I don't know that you can blame the builders. If you tell a builder to make you a house out of cardboard and he does, then is it his fault if it falls apart at the first rain?

473498 2006-07-26 21:49:00 Many of the owners of cardboard ones never even met the builder.

It was the developer who gave the orders.
The owners bought "completed" dwellings.
And now the developers have gone...

473499 2006-07-26 22:39:00 OK the developers then. But the builders would have known they were doing shonky work and OK everybody wants to make a living but still seems off to me. mark c (247)
473500 2006-07-27 02:54:00 Oh yes, I agree it's off - just that sadly it's mainly not the real culprits having to pay for it.
Most took the money and ran, turning their backs on repairs now.
